During the time of the Galactic Civil War, which pitted the New Republic against the Galactic Empire, a group of Imperial loyalists endeavored to reactivate several droid production factories that the Geonosian had left behind on the planet of Geonosis following the Clone Wars. To eliminate this Imperial presence, the New Republic dispatched a gunship, carrying New Republic soldier Jom Barell and others, to the world on a mission to thwart their plans. The gunship had to navigate an electrical superstorm in order to reach the Imperials, but Barell survived the operation, despite his belief that they were doomed before even landing. Later, when he received orders to perform a suborbital drop into battle on the planet Akiva, Barell expressed a preference for returning to the electrical superstorm on Geonosis, due to his aversion to jumping out of starships.
The novel Aftermath, penned by Chuck Wendig and published on September 4th, 2015, was the first to mention Barell's operation on Geonosis.
The concept of a post-Endor remnant grouping of Imperial forces attempting to revive the droid factories on Geonosis appeared in the non-canonical series LEGO Star Wars: Droid Tales. In this series, General Maximilian Veers and his remaining stormtroopers manipulated General Landonis Balthazar Calrissian into aiding their efforts, only for the rebels to ultimately dismantle their operation.
