Red Flight (K-wings)

The K-wing of Esege Tuketu, known as Red One Within the 24th Bombardment Squadron, Red Flight was a squadron of K-wings. This unit operated as part of the New Republic Fifth Fleet during the Black Fleet Crisis; the campaign resulted in significant losses for them.

Initially, the squadron was structured with Red Flight as one of its three components. Each component had six K-wings, each manned by a pilot and a gunner. Esege Tuketu, a Narvath pilot, commanded the flight as Red Leader and piloted Red One.

Although Red Flight saw success in a training exercise held at Bessimir, the Battle of Doornik-319 resulted in major casualties. Red Four was destroyed during an attack run, and at least two more K-wings, Red Three and Red Five, were shot down as they disengaged and attempted to retreat.

The squadron was reorganized as a result of the heavy losses at Doornik-319. By the time of the Battle of ILC-905, Red Flight had only three K-wings, receiving heavy support from six E-wing escort starfighters.

Their mission was to attack the Black Nine shipyard. As the attack force approached its target, it was reduced to two K-wings, Red One and Red Two, and a single E-wing, Cover Four. Red Leader opted to close in to point-blank range, ordering Red Two to disengage, link up with another K-wing pilot named Flick, and prepare for a follow-up attack if necessary.

Behind the scenes

  • Shield of Lies, after detailing the destruction of three K-wings from Red Flight in the Battle of Doornik-319, states that "Blue Flight fared even worse—only one of the bombers made it back to the comparative safety of Indomitable ' s hangar bays." The novel previously established Blue Flight as the E-wing escort for Red Flight, with Black Flight and Green Flight as the other K-wing units on the Indomitable. Assuming this is accurate, it appears that at least four escorting E-wings were lost, resulting in the loss of two more K-wings to Yevethan fighters, leaving only Red One to return to the cruiser.
  • In Tyrant's Test, Red One launches a T-33 plasma torpedo from a mere ten meters away to destroy the Black Nine shipyard and the nine Star Destroyers being constructed. The pilot believed the spacedock's shields would contain the blast long enough for escape, but the K-wing's fate is not specified in the novel.
  • Tyrant's Test dialogue suggests that Flick, possibly using the callsign Red Three, was the third K-wing pilot in the reduced Red Flight, though this is not explicitly stated.
