The 24th Bombardment Squadron, a unit equipped with BTL-S8 K-wing assault starfighters, served the New Republic's Fifth Fleet during the time of the Black Fleet Crisis. This squadron was stationed on the cruiser Indomitable throughout this specific conflict.
Originally, the squadron was structured with three flights: Black Flight, Red Flight, and Green Flight. Each of these bomber flights contained six BTL-S8 K-wing assault starfighters. Each fighter was manned by a pilot and gunner, giving the squadron an official combat strength of eighteen starfighters and thirty-six crew members. With this organizational structure, the squadron took part in the training exercise at Bessimir and the Battle of Doornik-319. During the battle, many pilots were stopped from completing their attack runs because of comm messages from hostages on the Yevethan ships. The squadron suffered considerable losses, mostly from Yevethan fighter attacks during their retreat, with Red Flight losing at least half of their K-wings. The 16th Fighter Squadron's accompanying E-wing escort starfighters also sustained significant damage.
Later, the squadron's organization was changed. A fourth flight, known as Blue Flight, was added, but each flight was reduced to three starfighters. This brought the total strength down to twelve K-wings. In this new structure, backed by a sizable escort of two dozen X-wing and E-wing starfighters, the squadron fought in the Battle of ILC-905.
The battle was considered a success for the K-wing squadron. Black Flight destroyed the thrustship Rizaron, and Red Flight eliminated the Black Nine shipyard, along with six Star Destroyers that were almost finished and three more still being built.
However, the squadron once again suffered severe losses, with at least six K-wings and over half of their fighter escorts being destroyed during the battle.
In the novel Before the Storm, the 24th Bombardment Squadron seems to be linked to a group of ships called assault cruisers, but they also work closely with the Star Destroyer Resolve. Later in the same book, they appear to be based on the carrier Imperious. In the following books, Shield of Lies and Tyrant's Test, they are connected to the cruiser Indomitable.
In the first scene of Before the Storm, the squadron divides into units of three planes, which are called "groups" or "flights" in the story. However, only three named sub-units are mentioned: Red Flight, Green Flight, and Black Flight. Shield of Lies says that these are formations of six planes, although the weakened squadron is later reorganized into four smaller flights in Tyrant's Test.
The identity of the squadron's commander is never clearly stated. The position seems to be open in Before the Storm, and there is some discussion about which officer might take the role.
The total number of K-wings destroyed during the Koornacht campaign is not specifically stated in the novels of the Black Fleet trilogy, but the losses were clearly significant. At Doornik-319 in Shield of Lies, the story focuses on Red Flight, and the destruction of three of their six fighters is clearly described. The text could suggest that Red One was the only plane to survive out of that unit's six K-wings, and their escorting flight of E-wings appears to be completely destroyed. At ILC-905 in Tyrant's Test, Blue Two, Black Three, and all three K-wings from Green Flight are explicitly stated to be destroyed by flak, while Blue Three is shot down by a Yevethan fighter. Red One is believed to have been lost while destroying the shipyard. Among the escorting fighters, the known casualties are three with Blue Flight, seven with Green Flight, one with Black Flight, and two with Red Flight.
