The Return was a significant movement initiated by Aga Awaud, a seasoned Mandalorian mercenary. During the chaotic New Sith Wars, Awaud returned to Mandalore, the cultural homeworld of the Mandalorians. There, he discovered that Mandalorian space was being attacked by raiders from neighboring sectors. Furthermore, most of his clan had succumbed to the Candorian plague, which was spreading throughout the galaxy. The loss of his family and the vulnerability of the Mandalore sector, where Mandalorian starships had to travel in armed convoys for safety, motivated Awaud to act. In 1058 BBY, he issued a call to all Mandalorians scattered across the galaxy, urging them to come to the aid of Mandalorian space. Many responded to Awaud's call, and the resulting large-scale migration of Mandalorians back to Mandalore became known as the Return. Aga Awaud later claimed the title of Mand'alor and earned the name "Mandalore the Uniter." Under his leadership, Mandalore experienced a resurgence in population and strength, successfully navigating the turmoil of the New Sith Wars and achieving prosperity. As a direct consequence of the Return, Mandalore evolved into a prominent industrial center in the region and a beacon of stability in the Outer Rim Territories, providing protection to nearby star systems and sectors.
Almost a millennium later, Tor Vizsla, the leader of Death Watch, regarded the Return as a crucial event in Mandalorian history. He wrote about the movement, its founder, and their significance in a manifesto titled Ba'jurne Kyr'tsad Mando'ad. In 40 ABY, nearly a decade after the extra-galactic Yuuzhan Vong devastated Mandalore during their invasion of the galaxy, the then-Mand'alor Boba Fett implemented a similar decree reminiscent of the original Return. Fett summoned two million Mandalorians from all parts of the galaxy to reinforce the planet's population and rebuild after the Yuuzhan Vong's destruction, which ultimately led to Mandalore's economic recovery.
The Return movement was first presented within the Star Wars mythos through The Essential Guide to Warfare, a comprehensive reference book co-authored by Jason Fry and Paul R. Urquhart, which saw publication on April 3, 2012. The following year saw the release of The Bounty Hunter Code: From the Files of Boba Fett, which further referenced the Return, as well as its impact on Mandalorian history.
