The RIC-series general labor droid, alternatively called the rickshaw droid or unipod droid, represented a basic labor droid model specifically engineered for pulling rickshaws. These droids, characterized by their brown colored plating, possessed a height of 1.1 meters and featured two arms, each terminating in a three-clawed hand. They navigated their environment using two wheels situated at the base of their structure. The RIC units shared a similar body design with tour guide droids. Notably, a Nuna-ball League match was displayed on one of the screens within the Outlander Club, showcasing a team of RIC-series droids competing against a team of Otoga-222 maintenance droids. In Mos Espa, a spaceport city located on the planet Tatooine, a rickshaw droid known as RIC-920 was active shortly before the First Battle of Geonosis.
The initial appearance of the RIC-series general labor droid occurred in the 2002 movie Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones. It was initially identified as simply a RIC droid within "High Noon on Jakku," a short story from 2015 authored by Landry Q. Walker. Later, the StarWars.com Databank provided a more specific designation, referring to it as an RIC-series general labor droid.
Marc Gabbana, a concept artist, finalized the design of the rickshaw droid. Gabbana's vision was that the droid and the rickshaw were separate entities, paired out of necessity rather than inherent design, despite the droid's intended purpose of pulling the rickshaw. In the final version seen in the film, the rickshaw droid, specifically RIC-290, was created entirely through computer generation.
