The Rift Valley, situated on the Outer Rim Territories planet of Dathomir, was a valley characterized by its rocky terrain and served as the location for a previous battle. Around the period spanning 12 BBY to 11 BBY, Merrin, a remaining member of the Nightsister clan of Dathomirian witches, who had suffered a slaughter in 20 BBY, made an attempt to infiltrate a base on an asteroid belonging to the Haxion Brood criminal organization. During her time on the asteroid, she came across Chellwinark Frethylrin, a Keshiri Imperial analyst who was defecting. After removing Frethylrin's helmet, she observed that the eyes of the Keshiri were the same red color as the sky visible above the Rift Valley.
