The Ring of Fortune represented one of a pair of legendary artifacts known as the Rings of Vaale. These rings were forged by the Architects of Vaale inside the city of Vaale, which was located on the planet called Dianth. Legend had it that the ring bestowed immense good luck on its user, but at the cost of accelerating their demise. However, this negative consequence could be nullified if the wearer also possessed the Ring of Immortality. A student from Shadow University named Detta Yao employed the services of Doctor Chelli Aphra, a rogue [archaeologist](/article/archaeologist], to locate the Rings of Vaale. She enlisted the aid of Professor Eustacia Okka in this endeavor, with the secret goal of acquiring the rings for herself. Okka unearthed the Ring of Fortune within the Architects' Mausoleum, only to find that its matching ring was absent. Yao's attempt to seize the Ring was thwarted when Just Lucky, an accomplice of the crew who was secretly in the employ of Ronen Tagge, absconded with it.
