Just Lucky existed as a human male who operated as both a smuggler and an assassin. His interactions with the rogue archaeologist Doctor Chelli Aphra were varied, sometimes as an ally, other times as an opponent.
During the Imperial Era, Just Lucky, a human male, made his living as a smuggler and assassin. His younger sibling, Pak, frequently found himself in gambling debt, which Lucky would then take responsibility for. While working with the Sixth Kin criminal syndicate, Lucky received guidance from Gallin Crae, a lieutenant within the organization, alongside Ariole Yu. Over time, Yu, Crae, and Lucky developed a familial bond, with Lucky and Yu engaging in a romantic relationship before eventually separating. On one occasion, Just Lucky attempted to eliminate the rogue archaeologist Doctor Chelli Aphra on Qlint, while also collaborating with her on Dathomir.
In the weeks that followed the Battle of Hoth, Lucky joined forces with Aphra, along with bounty hunters Krrsantan and Tubleek Ruz, to pilfer resources being transported offworld by the Galactic Empire. Following a successful ambush on a snowtroopers patrol, Ruz betrayed Aphra, prompting Lucky to eliminate Ruz with a sniper rifle. Subsequently, the three companions departed the planet aboard the Ark Angel III.
The crew journeyed to the Shadow University located in the Outer Rim, where they encountered Detta Yao, a student who offered Aphra assistance in locating the Rings of Vaale after they shared drinks in the cantina. Unbeknownst to the others, Ronen Tagge approached Lucky in the cantina, addressing Pak's outstanding debts. Tagge proposed settling the debts in exchange for Lucky's loyalty and service, an arrangement Lucky accepted to benefit his brother. Rejoining the group, Lucky accompanied Aphra to the Ruins of Kolkur in search of Doctor Eustacia Okka, Aphra's former classmate. However, as they attempted to recruit her for their expedition, a group of mercenaries arrived on behalf of Ronen Tagge, who also sought the rings. A firefight broke out, but the group managed to escape, with Okka agreeing to assist them in hopes of being reinstated at the University. As they charted a course for the planet Dianth, Lucky cautioned the crew about Tagge's influence, suggesting that he would stop at nothing to acquire the rings.
While en route to Dianth, Okka's droid TA-418 played a message from Tagge to Okka and Aphra, prompting Lucky to suggest to Yao that someone with access to her droid was assisting Tagge in their pursuit. As Aphra recounted her past with Tagge to the crew, Lucky sat and maintained his weapon. Upon entering Vaale, Lucky began to perceive a piercing high-pitched sound that was inaudible to the rest of the group. As the group explored the workshop of the Architects of Vaale and descended into their underground sanctum, Lucky and Okka returned to the murals to decipher clues on how to bypass the door. When Yao attempted to use a code to unlock the door, it emitted a deafening noise. Lucky and Black Krrsantan both fired at the key, silencing the noise but causing the floor beneath them to give way. Lucky, Krrsantan, and Okka plummeted while Aphra and Yao remained on the surface, where they were quickly surrounded by Tagge's forces.
Lucky, Krrsantan, and Professor Okka navigated their way from their fall to the Mausoleum of the Architects, where the Ring of Fortune rested on a pedestal. After covertly taking the ring from Okka, the trio reunited with Aphra and Yao just as Tagge's security forces arrived and secured the room. Revealing his possession of the Ring and his allegiance to the Tagges, Lucky instructed his troops to confine the expedition team in a cellar and conceal the entrance with debris. Ordering the Tagge fleet to bombard the planet from orbit, Lucky and his team abandoned Dianth to return to Ronen Tagge on Cantonica and collect their payment. Upon arriving at Canto Bight, Lucky and his team were dismayed when Tagge reduced their payment by two-thirds due to their failure to retrieve Professor Okka and the Ring of Immortality. Holding the threat of harming Lucky's brother over his head, Lucky reluctantly accepted the reduced payment and a night at the Crescent Royale Casino for him and his team. While at the casino, Lucky witnessed news of the explosion at the Tagge Pavilion and rushed to the scene. At the penthouse, he discovered Ronen Tagge alive, seized the Ring of Fortune for himself, and informed Domina Tagge about the incident.
After Domina Tagge offered a bounty for Doctor Aphra, Lucky and the insectoid bounty hunter Kharrek tracked her to Arveesh Station. Despite other bounty hunters already being present, Lucky managed to shoot down the speeder she used to escape. Kharrek then used a [neurotoxin](/article/neurotoxin]-laced dart to incapacitate her. Using Kharrek's ship, they transported her to The Acquisitor.
During their meeting with Domina Tagge, Aphra seized Kharrek's blaster, used one of his own darts to incapacitate him, and turned against Lucky and Domina's assistant Lapin. Domina and Aphra agreed to negotiate, after which she dismissed Lucky and Lapin.
Just Lucky's initial appearance was in the first issue of the comic series Star Wars: Doctor Aphra, penned by Alyssa Wong, illustrated by Marika Cresta, and released by Marvel Comics on May 4, 2020. The character's unveiling occurred prior to the issue's launch on January 23, 2020, through a StarWars.com article that announced the comic series and detailed its storyline and key figures. Wong characterized Lucky as someone "just here to have a good time" despite being surrounded by individuals who are "sad and stressed," such as Aphra. However, Wong also noted that Lucky himself harbors underlying "sad and stressed" feelings.
