TA-418, also referred to as Tee-Ay (or Teeaye), was a BD explorer droid who provided assistance to Doctor Eustacia Okka, previously a professor at the Shadow University during the Imperial Era. When Okka was persuaded to aid her former colleague, the renegade archaeologist Doctor Chelli Aphra, in the quest to locate the Rings of Vaale for Shadow University's student Detta Yao, TA-418 joined Okka in accompanying Aphra's team.
The group journeyed to what was believed to be the location of the Rings, the long-lost city of Vaale situated on the planet Dianth. While there, they faced pursuit from mercenaries employed by House of Tagge's heir Ronen Tagge, and were double-crossed by both Yao and Aphra's associate Just Lucky.

During the Galactic Empire's reign, which was a time, TA-418 served as an assistant to Doctor Eustacia Okka, a former professor at the Shadow University. In 3 ABY, TA-418 went with Okka to the Ruins of Kolkur on the Outer Rim world of Kolkur. While the pair were studying the ruins, they were met by the independent archaeologist Doctor Chelli Aphra, who had been tasked by Shadow University student Detta Yao with finding the ancient Rings of Vaale. Given Okka's extensive prior research on the Rings, Yao suggested that Aphra and her team—the bounty hunter Krrsantan and the assassin Just Lucky—seek her out for assistance. Aphra greeted TA-418 during her conversation with Okka, and the droid responded.
Okka initially declined to assist Aphra in locating the Rings, but their discussion was interrupted by Ronen Tagge's mercenaries from the House of Tagge, who sought to exploit the professor's knowledge to find the Rings, driven by a desire to destroy rare artifacts. The mercenaries tried to coerce Okka into collaborating with them, but Aphra's crew engaged them in a firefight, leading TA-418 to take cover with Okka and Aphra behind a stone pedestal. Okka used her knowledge of the ruins to activate large moving statues, creating a distraction for the mercenaries. TA-418 and Okka escaped aboard Aphra's starship, the Ark Angel III, where the former professor was ultimately convinced to aid the crew in their quest for the Rings.

While the Ark Angel III was traveling to the supposedly cursed city of Vaale on the planet Dianth, believed to be the location of the Rings, Tagge had TA-418 sliced, sending a recorded holographic message that threatened Okka with the repercussions of refusing to cooperate. The Ark Angel III arrived on Dianth, and the crew disembarked and entered Vaale. As the crew members were experiencing hallucinations, Okka and TA-418 discovered the Workshop of the Architects of Vaale, where the Architects of Vaale created the Rings. After going underground towards the workshop's entrance, the crew tried to find a way inside, with Yao requesting TA-418 to scan the mural etched on the door.
While attempting to open the door, the crew accidentally triggered a trap, causing a hole to open in the floor. Krrsantan, Lucky, and Okka fell through the hole, leaving TA-418 with Aphra and Yao. The three of them were immediately confronted by Tagge's mercenaries, who instead ordered Aphra to lead them to the Rings. Aphra feigned acceptance of Tagge's demands and continued searching the area. The mercenary Tucker triggered another trap, which pulled the mercenaries into the hole and also broke through the workshop's door. TA-418 followed Aphra and Yao inside, where they discovered that the one of the two Rings, supposedly within the workshop, was missing.
Inside the workshop, Aphra confronted Yao, realizing that her client intended to steal the Rings of Vaale for her own gain. They were interrupted by Okka, Lucky, and Krrsantan, who had survived their fall and found their way to the workshop, discovering the other Ring during their journey. Yao held Okka at gunpoint, demanding the artifact, but was tricked by Lucky, who had stolen the Ring. Aphra incapacitated Yao, but Lucky revealed that he had been working for Tagge as the mercenaries entered the workshop. Lucky and the mercenaries took the Ring and departed, sealing the exit to the workshop and trapping Aphra and her crew.
As Aphra's crew searched for another way out, TA-418 located a garbage hatch that led to the city's sewers. The droid drew the attention of the other crew members, guiding them toward the exit. The crew navigated the sewers, seeking a path out of the city, with Okka carrying TA-418. After TA-418 analyzed the bone material that made up the city, Okka determined that it was alive, emitting frequencies that targeted brain waves and caused their hallucinations.
The crew reached an exit, finding themselves near the Ark Angel III. Before they could board Aphra's starship, vessels from Ronen Tagge's fleet attacked the Ark Angel III, destroying it and forcing the crew to seek shelter from the explosion. Tagge's fleet then attacked Vaale, leaving the ancient city in ruins. As the crew searched the derelict starships located outside the city, Krrsantan discovered a centuries-old vessel from the High Republic that was still functional. Discussing their next steps, Aphra suggested lying low until the fleet withdrew and allowing Tagge to keep the Ring. Okka refused to let Tagge escape justice, and Aphra devised a plan to stop him.
Aphra exploited Tagge's previous slicing of TA-418, decrypting the connection and tracking Tagge to his residence in the city of Canto Bight on the planet Cantonica. Piloting the High Republic vessel to Cantonica, Aphra contacted Tagge's fleet. The fleet pursued her, damaging the main thruster of their ship. Aphra allowed Tagge's forces to board their ship, taking the crew prisoner and bringing them before Tagge. Tagge took Aphra and her crew to his penthouse in Canto Bight, where he revealed that he already possessed the other Ring of Vaale. As Tagge led the crew into his artifact gallery, TA-418 moved through his residence, unnoticed by Tagge or his forces.
TA-418, also known as Teeay, was a BD unit explorer droid with green and white plating and black sensors. The droid was equipped with a holoprojector and a scanner and possessed the ability to analyze matter to determine its properties.
TA-418 made its first appearance in the comic Doctor Aphra (2020) 1, written by Alyssa Wong, illustrated by Marika Cresta, and digitally released by Marvel Comics on May 4, 2020.
Although TA-418 was featured on the final release's cover, he was absent from the cover of the comic's initial solicitation. On the cover of the upcoming trade paperback Star Wars: Doctor Aphra Vol. 1 — Fortune and Fate, TA-418 bears a resemblance to fellow BD unit BD-1, who appeared in the video game Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order.
