Sanyassans were a species of humanoid beings inhabiting the galaxy. One notable member was Gruk, a pirate who, during the New Republic Era, commanded others of his kind in various criminal activities. These pirates engaged in a confrontation with the crew led by Sidon Ithano within the Lost Clusters region of the galaxy, culminating in Ithano's crew overpowering Gruk's forces and seizing control of his Munificent-class star frigate.
This species made its initial appearance in Star Wars canon within "Tales of Villainy: The Crimson Corsair and the Crime Lords of the Barren Rim." This narrative was penned by Landry Q. Walker and saw publication in Star Wars Adventures (2020) 7 in 2021. Walker disclosed via Twitter that the Sanyassans were conceived as the very same Sanyassan pirates that debuted in the 1985 television film Ewoks: The Battle for Endor. Walker's original concept involved the pirates actually being Ewoks; however, narrative complexities prompted the Sanyassans to ultimately assume that position.
