The Saurin were a sentient reptilian species originating from the world of Durkteel. Durkteel is situated within the Mid Rim region of the galaxy. These beings possessed prominent, sharp teeth, rough skin marked by protrusions, and cranial ridges extending along their heads. On the very day that Obi-Wan Kenobi and Luke Skywalker first encountered Han Solo and Chewbacca at the cantina in Mos Eisley, two Saurin individuals were present as customers. Furthermore, a Saurin character by the name of Gauron Nas Tal resided in Jabba the Hutt's palace, functioning as a combat instructor for Jabba. Despite his employment under Jabba, Gauron harbored secret intentions to assassinate him.
During the filming of the bar sequence in Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, two Saurin characters were featured. During production, these characters were referred to as "Crockers" or "Gila-Men." It was intended that one of the Saurins would be named "Gilaass."
