Security scanners, made by DeTECHt, were security devices designed to identify dangers like weaponry, bombs, risky substances, or other potential risks. These scanners, initially developed in 9 BBY, found use within the Galactic Empire during that same year, specifically at the Imperial Security Bureau's II-0810 Satellite Station. The Fortress Inquisitorius on Nur also employed them in 9 BBY.
The initial appearance of security scanners occurred in "Part IV," the fourth episode of the Disney+ limited series Obi-Wan Kenobi. Their identification as security scanners was first made public during a Star Wars San Diego Comic-Con 2023 panel. This panel disclosed details from the forthcoming Star Wars Dawn of Rebellion The Visual Guide reference book, scheduled for release in 2023. Their genesis can be traced back to the Legends timeline in Alan Dean Foster's 1976 novelization of the 1977 original trilogy film, Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope.
