Selby Jarrad

Selby Sel Jarrad was a female Human from Averill, operating as an agent for New Republic Intelligence.

Biography

Born into a powerful mining family on Averill, Jarrad's perspective shifted upon the Galactic Empire's occupation of her homeworld, instilling in her a desire to resist their rule. A distant relative, serving as an officer within New Republic Intelligence, visited Averill and recruited her into their ranks.

In 7 ABY, the New Republic dispatched her to Verkuyl with the mission of liberating the planet from Imperial control. Alongside Claris and under the command of Cobb Vartos, their objective was to compel Governor Parco Ein to either surrender Verkuyl to the New Republic or face death. During a reception for potential bidders for the new bacta manufacturing plant Ein had commissioned, she separated from Vartos. This allowed Vartos to carefully scout the reception, followed by a reconnaissance of the Hall itself. Three hours later, after enduring two plates of food and countless conversations with bidders, Sel discreetly left the reception to locate Ein's office. She successfully bypassed a dozen security sensors before reaching her destination. With the assistance of a cleaning droid, she effectively concealed a miniature eavesdropping device within her necklace, which was then deposited into Ein's wastebasket near his desk.

Having completed the initial phase of her mission, she was nearly intercepted by one of Ein's assistants, Daven Quarle, who questioned her presence on that floor. To avoid any issues with the Empire, she explained that she had come to the Verkuylian Imperial Governor's Hall to admire the view and that the turbolift had not taken her to the roof. Quarle generously offered to escort her to the rooftop, which she accepted, accompanying him to the top of the Governor's Hall. At that moment, she found it difficult to distinguish between a genuine offer and a deception. Sel was pleasantly surprised that Quarle simply wanted to stargaze with her, and even more surprised at how much she enjoyed talking to him without any hidden agendas. During their conversation, she inquired about his potential actions if he were in charge of Verkuyl, after learning that it was his home world and that he had never left it. After being interrupted by another of Ein's aides, Jorli, he escorted her back to her room. Sel was relieved to learn from Vartos that Quarle was a resistance fighter with the Verkuylians, as she did not want to have a confrontation between herself and Quarle as enemies.

The following morning, she discovered that Claris had been apprehended and his transmission intercepted while she was on a turbolift to meet with Ein. Gaining access to Ein proved challenging, as his guards denied her entry and forced her to reschedule her appointment. As she departed to reunite with Vartos, she encountered him and Quarle being arrested by stormtroopers. Just as she was about to eliminate the stormtrooper arresting Vartos, another trooper ordered her to halt. Undeterred by the order, she attempted to free Vartos by firing upon the trooper holding him. After firing the first shot, she took cover and then fired again, killing the first trooper and creating a distraction by destroying the room's lighting switch, allowing her and Quarle to escape. However, she sustained a wound to her arm from a stray blaster bolt. Sel and Quarle fled from another pair of troopers and successfully evaded them after Quarle led them into the secret passages of the Governor's Hall. Quarle tended to her arm and shared stories of his grandfather, explaining why the people of Verkuyl had been so resistant to repelling the Empire. Quarle then left to find a terminal to contact the New Republic fleet waiting outside of the Verkuyl system. To her shock, she discovered that Quarle was a double agent working for Ein, who had instructed Quarle to delay her until an Imperial fleet could arrive to reinforce Verkuyl. Stunned by Quarle's views on the Republic, Sel was forced to stun him with her blaster and tie him up while she contacted the Republic fleet, successfully completing the mission in the process. Despite the liberation of Verkuyl, she didn't experience the sense of satisfaction she had anticipated, but was grateful that both Vartos and Claris had survived.
