The 22-page, full-color comic, "Shadows and Light," was published within Star Wars Tales 23. Despite being promoted as a preliminary story to the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic video game, it only delves into a small portion of the game's preceding events. The comic's narrative originates from the journals of the three Jedi characters whose remains are discovered during the game.
The story unfolds in 3993 BBY. The terentatek, largely believed to be extinct following the Great Hunt, are unexpectedly located on Korriban. The Jedi Council of Dantooine dispatches three Jedi—Duron Qel-Droma, Shaela Nuur, and Guun Han Saresh—those deemed most resistant to the allure of the dark side, to resume the Great Hunt.
Upon their arrival on Korriban, Guun becomes aware of the romantic relationship between Shaela and Duron. Convinced that his fellow Jedi are succumbing to the dark side's influence, Guun abandons them, traveling to Kashyyyk, where rumors suggest a terentatek, unknown to the Council, resides. Intriguingly, Guun himself rationalizes his use of seduction to extract information, deeming it acceptable for a Jedi. He attempts to lure the creature using a similar method to Revan: suspending a dead animal from a liana. However, he is unable to defeat the beast.
On Korriban, Shaela and Duron sense Guun Han's demise through the Force. Shortly thereafter, Duron is killed by a terentatek. Before his death, Duron experiences visions of the impending Jedi Civil War. Shaela, overwhelmed by grief and rage at the loss of her beloved, succumbs to vengeance and falls to the dark side. Seeking the terentatek responsible for Duron's death, she encounters not one, but two. Consumed by fury, Shaela refuses to back down and prepares to confront both terentateks. At that crucial moment, Shaela's lightsaber fails, plunging the room into darkness, and she remembers the words of her Master: she must remain in the light.
