Sign language

Sign language served as a method of communication that relied on gestures, rather than spoken words, to transmit meaning.

The Anomids originating from Yablari, who lacked the ability to speak, interacted with each other utilizing a complex and very subtle combination of gestures involving both their hands and bodies. The Twi'lek inhabitants of Ryloth had created a distinctive sign language that used their lekku, the fleshy appendages extending from the back of their heads, instead of their hands and arms. Tusken Raiders, who naturally spoke Tusken, were also known to employ a form of sign language called Tusken Sign Language when they needed to engage in discussions with individuals from other cultures.

History

Cobb Vanth uses both sign language and his voice in an argument with a Tusken Raider

One kind of sign language was based on movements or shapes created with the hands and arms. In one instance recorded in 21 BBY, Jedi Master Eeth Koth used sign language to relay his hyperspace coordinates to the Jedi High Council after being captured. Prisoners held within the Narkina 5 Imperial Prison Complex, such as Taga and Birnok, would use sign language to communicate through windows across the hallways.

[Boba Fett](/article/boba_fett], formerly a bounty hunter, used Tusken Sign Language in part to converse with his Tusken Raider tribe. A hunter of bounties known as "The Mandalorian" used Tusken Sign Language to negotiate with a pair of Tusken Raiders.
