The Sinking Fields, situated in the Goazon Badlands of Jakku, lay to the north of both Niima Outpost and the AT-AT that Rey's called home. This area became the location where Poe Dameron and FN-2187 crash-landed their Special Forces TIE fighter after escaping the First Order's flagship, the Finalizer. Almost immediately after the crash, the fields completely engulfed the TIE fighter, much to Finn's dismay. The former stormtrooper then proceeded across the Sinking Fields to Niima Outpost, where he met Rey and BB-8, Dameron's missing BB unit.
Before this incident, Rey had cautioned BB-8 about venturing into the Sinking Fields; however, the droid had already resolved to remain by her side.
