A song sparrow constituted a species of bird, notable for its colorful plumage, that was native to the planet of Coruscant. Ky Narec, a Jedi Knight, derived pleasure from feeding and observing song sparrows, along with crown finches, as they flew about the Great Tree, a feature of the Jedi Temple training ground situated within the Jedi Temple on Coruscant. In approximately 23 BBY, Narec's recorded voice communicated to Sith apprentice Asajj Ventress that his time off-world was made more difficult by missing the birds that lived in the Jedi Temple. The Temple's Great Tree was a common location to see song sparrows fluttering.
The audio drama Dooku: Jedi Lost, penned by Cavan Scott and released on April 30, 2019, marked the initial mention of song sparrows within the current Star Wars canon. The audio drama's script release on October 1 of the same year verified the spelling of "song sparrows". Within the Star Wars Legends continuity, the short story "Tinian on Trial," authored by Kathy Tyers and featured in Star Wars Adventure Journal 4 by West End Games in November 1994, represented the first reference to song sparrows.
