The timeline of Star Wars: Rebellion mirrors that of the Original Trilogy films, with the Rise of the Empire expansion extending it to incorporate Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. The game presents an alternative history, allowing players to shape the Galactic Civil War by making their own decisions, including determining the location of the Rebel Base and who gets frozen in carbonite.
The Empire's objective is to locate the Rebel Base and eliminate the Rebel forces stationed there. Conversely, the Rebels aim to accumulate victory points to expedite the game's conclusion before the Imperials can find and destroy their base.
Gameplay revolves around "Mission cards." At the beginning of each round, both factions select Mission cards from their hand and assign "Leaders" – iconic Star Wars characters – to them. The subsequent phase constitutes the core of the gameplay, with players alternating turns to activate their Missions and move their units across the galaxy (switching between Rebel and Imperial players after each action).
Activating a Mission involves following the instructions on the card. Missions typically introduce specific story elements and tactical advantages, enabling actions ranging from training a character with Yoda to relocating the Rebel base. A simple dice system determines the success of each mission, and the opposing player can assign their remaining Leaders to decrease the active player's chances of success.
Alternatively, a player can use their turn to move units by placing a Leader not assigned to a Mission on the desired space on the board, allowing them to move friendly units from adjacent areas into it.
The game concludes when either side achieves its specific victory condition.
