More than two decades following the establishment of the New Republic, Lady Carise Sindian came to possess the title, inheriting it from the deceased Lord Mellowyn, with the blessing of the original heir, Princess Leia Organa. Nevertheless, Sindian was quickly relieved of the title after she violated the sanctity of the royal seal.
The Inner Rim planet of Birren employed the title of supreme governor through its governmental structure. This hereditary title was given to select members of the Elder Houses—the collective of hereditary royal families from across the galaxy—and held until death. However, by the time the New Republic had been established, hereditary nobility was not taken seriously by many, and the title had become largely ceremonial in the eyes of the people and government of Birren.

The ceremony culminated within the Great Hall of Birren, where hundreds of Birrenese citizens watched as an Arbiter presented the new governor with the symbolic emblems of leadership: a cloth-of-gold mantle and a scepter, signifying the governor's role in protecting and defending the people of Birren.

Lady Carise Sindian succeeded him, having received permission from the intended heir, Princess Leia Organa of the House of Organa, who believed the lengthy inauguration process would interfere with important Senate duties. However, Sindian's breach of the royal seal, when she revealed a private recording from within the Great Hall exposing Sith Lord Darth Vader as Organa's biological father, led to her being stripped of all royal titles, including that of supreme governor.
