Suurja, a planet primarily dedicated to agrarian pursuits, possessed a breathable atmosphere and resided within the Suurja system located in the Outer Rim Territories area of the galaxy. It was inhabited by both the native species known as Suurjans and a colonist population totaling 16 million individuals. By the year of 3966 BBY, Suurja functioned as a crucial source of resources for the nearby city-covered world of Taris.
During the initial stages of the conflict between the Mandalorian Neo-Crusaders and the Galactic Republic, both factions engaged in four devastating battles on Suurja, which ultimately proved to be indecisive. These conflicts resulted in a large number of the planet's inhabitants becoming refugees. In 3964 BBY, the Mandalorians successfully captured a significant contingent of Jedi crusaders on Suurja's surface. These Jedi were then transported to the Flashpoint Stellar Research Station where they became experimental subjects for the Mandalorian scientist known as Demagol.
Positioned within the Suurja system of the Outer Rim Territories region of the galaxy, Suurja was an agrarian planet. As the primary planet in the star system, it also formed a part of the Ojoster sector.
Serving as a resource-providing planet for the city-covered planet of Taris, Suurja fulfilled this role by the year of 3966 BBY. In that year, the Mandalorian Neo-Crusaders, who had been conquering independent planets beyond the Galactic Republic's controlled space for a decade, began to pose a threat to Suurja and other resource planets of Taris. This prompted the Republic to extend membership and military protection to Taris. Consequently, the Jebble-Vanquo-Tarnith line, a Republic security cordon, was established, placing Suurja on the frontline. The subsequent year saw Mandalorian forces engage the Republic Military in four inconclusive battles on Suurja over six weeks, leading to the planet's devastation and the displacement of many of its agrarian inhabitants, who became refugees. These refugees were pursued by the Mandalorians to planets like Vanquo.

In 3964 BBY, a large contingent of Jedi Knights associated with the Revanchist faction within the Jedi Order were present on Suurja for a scouting mission. Despite the earlier withdrawal of Mandalorian forces from the Suurja system, they were ambushed by Mandalorian forces who had remained on the planet. Many Jedi who survived the initial surprise attack, including the Human Jedi Knight Alek, were captured by the Mandalorian Neo-Crusaders and transported to the Flashpoint Stellar Research Station. This facility was where the Mandalorian scientist Demagol conducted experiments on Jedi. Also in that year, Zayne Carrick, a former Jedi Padawan, adopted the guise of a refugee from Suurja to infiltrate an outpost belonging to miners on Vanquo.
Suurja's first appearance in-universe was in The Taris Holofeed: Prime Edition, an article penned by John Jackson Miller and featured in the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic/Rebellion flip-book on March 1, 2006. The Essential Atlas, a reference book published in 2009, placed the Suurja system, and consequently the planet Suurja, in grid square N-7.
