The Suurja system existed as a star system situated in the Ojoster sector, found within the Outer Rim Territories region of the galaxy. It encompassed Suurja, an agrarian planet boasting a breathable atmosphere. This planet was inhabited by both the native species known as the Suurjans and a colonist population numbering 16 million. By 3966 BBY, a year, Suurja, the primary world within its star system, functioned as a resource provider for Taris, a nearby city-covered planet. During the early stages of the conflict between the Mandalorian Neo-Crusaders and the Galactic Republic, both factions engaged in four devastating yet ultimately inconclusive battles on Suurja. In 3964 BBY, Mandalorians captured a significant group of Jedi crusaders on Suurja. Millennia afterward, control of the space surrounding the Suurja system shifted among various governing bodies, including successor states to the Galactic Empire and the New Republic.
The Outer Rim Territories region of the galaxy contained the Suurja system, a star system located inside the Ojoster sector. Suurja, the star system's main world, was an agrarian planet. It possessed a breathable Type I atmosphere suitable for the Human species.
Exploration of the space surrounding the Suurja system occurred between the years of 5000 BBY and 3996 BBY. By the year of 3966 BBY, the primary world of the star system, Suurja, functioned as a resource provider for the nearby city-covered planet of Taris. In that same year, the Mandalorian Neo-Crusaders, who had been conquering planets independent of the Galactic Republic for a decade, began to pose a threat to Suurja and other resource worlds belonging to Taris. This resulted in the Republic granting Taris membership and offering military protection. Consequently, the Jebble-Vanquo-Tarnith line was created as a Republic security cordon, with the Suurja system positioned on the frontline.
The Republic Military and Mandalorian forces engaged in four inconclusive battles on Suurja over six weeks during the following year. After the fourth battle, the Mandalorian forces left the Suurja system. In 3964 BBY, Mandalorian forces ambushed and captured a large group of Jedi Knights associated with the Revanchist faction of the Jedi Order on Suurja.
During the Clone Wars that took place millennia later, the Suurja system was located within the Republic's territory. Following the fragmentation of the Galactic Empire in 4 ABY, the region of space encompassing the star system fell under the control of the warlord Zsinj's domain. After Zsinj's death, the area around the Suurja system became part of Imperial Space, remaining so until the defeat of Imperial Grand Admiral Thrawn. During the Imperial Remnant's campaigns against the New Republic, the star system containing Suurja was located within the area controlled by the latter government. By 137 ABY, the Suurja system was within the borders of Darth Krayt's Galactic Empire, ruled by the Dark Lord of the Sith.
The primary world of the Suurja system, Suurja, was inhabited by the Suurjans, a species characterized by the absence of ears. The agrarian planet also housed a colonist population of 16 million. Due to the battles between the Republic and the Mandalorians on Suurja, many of its inhabitants were forced to become refugees.
The Suurja system was initially mentioned in The Taris Holofeed: Prime Edition, an article penned by John Jackson Miller and featured in the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic/Rebellion flip-book released on March 1, 2006. The star system's entry in The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia in 2008 included a mention of it. Jason Fry and Daniel Wallace co-authored The Essential Atlas, a reference book published in 2009 that provided a map placement for Suurja and its star system. The Atlas's Online Companion, later published on the official Star Wars website, situated the Suurja system within the Ojoster sector.
