Plot summary

Finn and Ducain escape stormtroopers

From Horizon Base, Finn contacted Poe Dameron, communicating to him that the First Order's presence on the base was larger than initially thought. Finn and Dameron were concerned that the First Order's objective was the same as theirs. Dameron instructed him to figure out the situation with his partner, emphasizing that the Resistance was depending on him.

Gannis Ducain, his partner, was on this mission seeking to atone for errors made in the past. As they were in the middle of an argument about Ducain's theft of the Millennium Falcon, a stormtrooper from the First Order halted them and demanded their identification. To avoid capture, Finn caused cargo support above the stormtroopers to fall, incapacitating them. Following this, they hurried into the base.

The candori picked up Finn and Ducain

Once inside, Ducain informed Finn that his reason for joining the Resistance was self-improvement. However, Finn's primary focus was combating the First Order. Their conversation was interrupted by a loud booming sound that reverberated throughout the base. As the sound grew louder, Finn and Ducain wondered about its source. Suddenly, a candori seized them and attempted to devour them.

A man below explained that the candori was his, used to safeguard him and his fellow Oruans from the First Order, who mistakenly thought Finn and Ducain were affiliated with them. Ducain clarified that they were members of the Resistance, not First Order personnel. The man expressed his belief that the Resistance was defunct. Finn countered, stating that they were aware of the First Order's actions against their planet and that they were now isolated, much like the Resistance. Subsequently, the man ordered their release.

Finn warned him that the First Order would arrive soon, seeking him. The man acknowledged this and introduced himself as Mezlo. He had previously attempted to drive the First Order off his planet with a small force, but he was unsuccessful. He also assumed Finn was there to recruit him. He declined to join, preferring to fight for honor rather than a cause. He viewed the Resistance as individuals seeking to be heroes. This angered Finn, who recounted his past as a stormtrooper and the difficulties he faced in joining the Resistance. Mezlo apologized for his misjudgment, but their conversation was cut short by the arrival of stormtroopers.

The stormtroopers commanded them to remain still. Ducain believed they were doomed, but Mezlo had a plan. Unexpectedly, another candori descended from the ceiling and captured the stormtroopers. Finn requested extraction from Dameron as they opened fire on the stormtroopers.

Finn reiterated his request for Mezlo to join the Resistance, but Mezlo again refused, stating that he and his people would fight against the First Order. They successfully escaped and reached the Falcon. Mezlo did, however, promise to aid the Resistance if needed, and Finn reciprocated the promise.

Back on the Falcon, Dameron expressed disappointment that the Oruans had not joined them, feeling that the Resistance remained alone. Finn, however, disagreed. While the First Order possessed an army, they lacked honor, a quality shared by the Oruans and the Resistance. He believed that the Oruans would eventually fight alongside them one day, and they would no longer be alone.
