Development

Jonathan W. Rinzler, the writer, shared on a StarWars.com blog that the creation of The Star Wars 1 presented challenges for him, editor Randy Stradley, and artist Mike Mayhew, as it marked Rinzler's debut in writing a significant comic book. During the adaptation process, Rinzler implemented several subtle alterations to Lucas's original script to enhance its suitability for the comic book medium.

For the illustrations in this issue, Mayhew needed to first envision and design various props, spacecraft, characters, and environments before commencing with the layout work. In the design of the Palace of Lite, Rinzler and Mayhew drew inspiration from Disney's 1992 animated feature, Aladdin.
