Transponder beacons functioned as tracking devices. In the time of the High Republic Era, the Jedi Grand Master known as Yoda provided Krix Kamerat with a holoprojector that had an embedded transponder beacon; this was done so Kamerat could be located after his abduction by the Nihil. Subsequently, Eye of the Nihil Marchion Ro found the beacon and intended to use it to ambush the Jedi, despite its limited operational range.
