Eye of the Nihil

The designation Eye of the Nihil signified a prominent position within the Nihil organization during the High Republic Era. Marchion Ro, following in the footsteps of his father, held the crucial role of Eye of the Nihil among the Nihil marauders. Although he didn't directly issue commands – a responsibility held by the Tempest Runners – Ro was central to everything, providing the elements that elevated the Nihil beyond a mere band of Outer Rim raiders. The Eye of the Nihil possessed the deciding vote on matters related to Paths and was entrusted with the duty of safeguarding, locating, and distributing the Paths. This structure was altered in 232 BBY when Marchion Ro, after the Battle of Kur, consolidated the Tempests under his command by vowing to broaden their operations throughout the galaxy and shield their way of life from the Galactic Republic and the Jedi Order. The Jedi were unaware of Ro's existence and mistakenly identified the Twi'lek Tempest Runner Lourna Dee as the Eye. Following the Battle of Galov, Dee was presumed killed, although she had secretly survived. Still ignorant of Ro's existence, Jedi High Council member Stellan Gios reported unconfirmed rumors of several potential candidates to replace her, among them the Talpini Zeetar. Dee later revealed to the Jedi that she was alive, and Jedi Master Avar Kriss continued to believe that she was the Eye. Dee was captured by the Jedi and taken to Starlight Beacon, but she managed to escape due to Marchion's destruction of the station. After Starlight's destruction, Marchion revealed his true identity as the Eye of the Nihil to the galaxy.

Behind the scenes

The Eye of the Nihil title initially appeared in the 2021 novel The High Republic: Light of the Jedi, penned by Charles Soule. In Soule's The High Republic: Eye of the Storm 1, which was released on January 12, 2022, Shalla Ro is identified as the Eye. However, Star Wars: The High Republic Character Encyclopedia, authored by Amy Richau and Megan Crouse and published on November 9, 2023, asserts that Asgar Ro, her son who assumed control of the Nihil after her passing, was the first Eye. For the purpose of the succession table, this article acknowledges Shalla Ro as an Eye.
