Unidentified battle droid

A battle droid found itself in the care of the droidsmith Babu Frik for repairs in the year 35 ABY, commissioned by a wealthy patron. Frik's intention was to bestow upon the battle droid a sense of self and enhance its command capabilities as he tinkered with it in his workshop situated on the planet Kijimi. However, before the droid could be fully restored, the Sith Eternal unleashed a cataclysm, destroyed Kijimi, and Frik barely managed to escape the planetary annihilation.

Biography

During the war that raged in 35 ABY between the First Order and the Resistance, a battle droid was entrusted to the skilled hands of droidsmith Babu Frik. A client, promising a generous fee, sought its repair. As Frik meticulously worked on the battle droid within his workshop nestled in Kijimi City of the planet Kijimi, he implemented modifications and upgrades. These enhancements aimed to imbue the droid with greater self-awareness and elevate its command functions, albeit with a touch of illegality.

A few days before Frik anticipated the completion of the repairs, the droid was missing a portion of one arm from the elbow down. The droid exhibited subtle movements as Frik meticulously rewired its circuits. The droidsmith firmly instructed it to maintain stillness, assuring it that the repairs would soon be finalized. Nevertheless, the droid's audioreceptors detected sounds emanating from the outside, prompting it to glance through the workshop's window. The sound heralded Kijimi's impending destruction at the hands of the Xyston-class Star Destroyer Derriphan, a vessel belonging to the Sith Eternal's fleet, known as the Final Order. In the moments preceding the planet's catastrophic implosion, Zorii Bliss, the leader of the Spice Runners of Kijimi, rescued Frik, leaving the battle droid behind.

Characteristics

During its time under Babu Frik's repair, the battle droid displayed occasional involuntary movements, yet it heeded the droidsmith's command to remain motionless. Frik's intention was to alter the droid's core programming, granting it a heightened sense of self and enabling it to execute more complex command operations, though he could not fully complete these upgrades.

Behind the scenes

The battle droid made an appearance, although without explicit naming, in the novelization of the 2019 cinematic release, Star Wars: Episode IX The Rise of Skywalker. The novel was penned by Rae Carson and released in 2020. Within the film itself, an OOM command battle droid is visible within Frik's workshop, but no explicit confirmation was given to indicate that this battle droid was the same unit that he worked on in the novel.
