The Resistance has been revitalized. A renewed spirit of rebellion spreads throughout the galaxy. However, despite Rey and her allies rejoining the fight, the conflict against the First Order, now under the command of Supreme Leader Kylo Ren, is far from resolved.
Rey, Finn, Poe, and the Resistance must embark on the most dangerous quest they have ever undertaken. This time, they will face it together. With the assistance of both familiar faces and new comrades, along with the enigmatic guidance of the Force, the narrative that commenced in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and continued in Star Wars: The Last Jedi reaches its stunning climax.
The novel deviates from the theatrical release in several instances, presenting scenes absent from the final cut of the film.
- The novel begins with General Leia Organa training Rey on Ajan Kloss. The two engage in extensive conversation, with Leia recounting her Jedi training under Luke Skywalker. Leia then hears a voice she recognizes, telling her "it's time." After a disturbing Force vision, Rey converses with Rose Tico and Temmin Wexley.
- The opening moments on Mustafar are lengthened, featuring a scene between General Armitage Hux and Allegiant General Enric Pryde. Following the elimination of the cultists, Supreme Leader Kylo Ren comes across the Eye of Webbish Bog, a sentient being resembling an oracle that emerges from a dark lake. This entity directs him to the Sith Wayfinder.
- When Kylo Ren discovers Palpatine within the Sith Citadel on Exegol, Palpatine provides more details about Snoke. He clarifies that killing Snoke served as Ren's ultimate trial. The novel specifies that the figure before Ren is a clone body housing Palpatine's damaged essence. As the Sith fleet rises from the subterranean launch bays, Sith troopers are depicted standing rigidly in formation, echoing the clone troopers at the conclusion of Attack of the Clones.
- When Poe Dameron, Finn, Chewbacca, Klaud, and R2-D2 obtain the information from Boolio at the Sinta Glacier Colony, Boolio explains that the First Order traced the spy's transmission to his location, which is the reason TIE Fighters suddenly appear and pursue the Millennium Falcon.
- Before the group departs for Pasaana, Leia shares a moment with Maz Kanata. They discuss Leia's deteriorating health and the challenges Rey might encounter on her journey. Rose embraces Rey in farewell, and Finn does the same with Rose.
- During the reconstruction of Kylo Ren's helmet, there is dialogue between Ren and Albrekh that is absent in the film version.
- Aboard the Steadfast, stormtroopers present a captured Boolio before the newly masked Kylo Ren and his Knights of Ren. Boolio stares defiantly at the Supreme Leader as Ren uses his crossguard lightsaber to behead him.
- When the group encounters Lando Calrissian in his tank-crawler at the Festival of Ancestors, Lando briefly alludes to his kidnapped daughter.
- After the group escapes Pasaana aboard the Bestoon Legacy, Lando witnesses the Falcon being captured by stormtroopers, which motivates him to rejoin the fight.
- After being taken to Interrogation Six, Chewbacca receives a visit from Kylo Ren. Ren attempts to delve into the Wookiee's mind for information regarding the group's mission, but instead experiences memories of his childhood and teenage years with Chewbacca and Han Solo.
- At the Resistance base, Leia delivers an inspiring speech to the Resistance, commending the efforts of Rose and the Engineering Corps. Leia again hears a familiar voice telling her, "it's time."
- The Falcon was being dismantled while in the possession of the First Order, which damaged the landing gear and caused the group to crash-land on Kef Bir.
- After the spirit of Luke raised Red Five from the water on Ahch-To, Rey salvaged the remaining working parts of the destroyed TIE whisper to make it capable of flight.
- Zorii Bliss attempts to help many of her crew escape Kijimi, but only succeeds in leaving with Babu Frik in her Y-wing, the Comeuppance.
- The Derriphan returns to Exegol after it destroyed Kijimi, and it is subsequently destroyed in the battle that follows.
- Before departing for the Core Systems, Lando shares an emotional moment with the Falcon, viewing a hologram of a young Ben Solo and Chewbacca. He regains his composure, telling his old friend, "You said it, Chewie. One last time."
- As Rey is about to defeat Palpatine, she peers into his mind. There, she witnesses Palpatine falling to his death on the Death Star II, channeling all the power of the dark side to transport his spirit to a place "far, far away." She also sees how her father was created using strandcasts from Palpatine's DNA, and that he was deemed a failure, only serving a purpose in furthering the bloodline through more conventional means.
- When Rose inquires why Finn is staying behind on the Steadfast, Finn replies that he is "saving what he loves."
- As Rey grieves over the death of Ben Solo, she hears his voice speaking to her.
- When Finn, Rey, and Poe are reunited after the battle, Finn tearfully begins to tell Rey and Poe what he tried to tell Rey earlier, but they interrupt him, saying they already know.
