From the remains of the fallen Empire, a new danger to the galaxy's freedom has emerged: the formidable First Order. Thankfully, fresh heroes have risen to fight—and potentially sacrifice everything—for the cause. Rey, the Force-sensitive orphan; Finn, the former stormtrooper who opposes his previous commanders; and Poe Dameron, the daring X-wing pilot, are united in their struggle alongside General Leia Organa and the Resistance. However, the First Order's Supreme Leader Snoke and his ruthless enforcer Kylo Ren command overwhelming numbers and devastating firepower. Against such odds, the champions of light may be on the verge of annihilation. Their sole hope lies with a legendary figure in hiding: Jedi Master Luke Skywalker.
Picking up directly where Star Wars: The Force Awakens concluded, Star Wars: The Last Jedi commences, as the conflict between good and evil escalates to unprecedented levels.

This novel provides several variations from the movie, including scenes not included in the final cut:
- The novel begins with a dream experienced by Luke Skywalker, depicting an alternate reality where he didn't save Leia Organa from the Death Star and therefore never joined the Alliance to Restore the Republic. In this alternate timeline, Luke married Camie Marstrap, Biggs Darklighter's family was abducted by stormtroopers, Jabba Desilijic Tiure remained alive and continued to collect water taxes, the Tusken Raiders were eradicated from Tatooine, Leia was executed, the Death Star was never destroyed, and so on. In this alternate life, Luke regretted not having children.
- The novel features a funeral service for Han Solo, occurring during the initial hours of the evacuation of D'Qar. During the funeral, Leia delivers a eulogy for Solo, recounting aspects of his early life and key actions during the Galactic Civil War.
- There's expanded dialogue between Captain Moden Canady and his warrant officer Suday Bascus on board the Fulminatrix.
- As Luke instructs Rey on Ahch-To, Chewbacca begins repairing the ill-advised modifications made to the Millennium Falcon by Gannis Ducain, the Irving Boys, and Unkar Plutt.
- On Ahch-To, Luke informs Rey about a neighboring tribe to the Caretakers who engage in monthly "raids and plunder" of their village. Rey is appalled and wishes to intervene, but Luke warns her that confronting them with force would only result in a larger and more violent return the following month. Rey, unconvinced, rushes to intervene, lightsaber in hand, only to discover a party in progress. She covers her intentions by waving the saber ceremonially and joins the festivities briefly, later criticizing Luke for his choice of words, "raid and plunder." Despite dancing together, Rey remains upset with Luke, disillusioned by the contrast between his legend and her current perception of him.
- While disguised as First Order officers aboard the Supremacy, Finn, Rose Tico, and DJ find themselves sharing a turbolift with stormtroopers from the First Order. One of them recognizes Finn, causing him to fear exposure. However, the stormtrooper simply congratulates Finn on his promotion, albeit with surprise. Finn silently thanks the First Order's bureaucracy, which, in its embarrassment, failed to disseminate news of his betrayal to the rank-and-file stormtroopers.
- During the Battle of Crait, as Luke struggles with his extended Force projection, a familiar voice whispers "Let go, Luke," echoing the phrase he heard during the Battle of Yavin before destroying the Death Star. It remains unclear whether Luke genuinely heard the phrase or not.
- The novel concludes with Leia and Chewbacca grieving the loss of everyone, including Han and Luke, with Organa telling the Wookiee that they are now alone.
- Similar to the short story "Poe's Plan," [6] The Last Jedi: Expanded Edition portrays Poe Dameron receiving authorization to engage the First Order fleet above D'Qar while on the bridge of the Raddus after the ships have arrived. However, this sequence of events was later contradicted by Poe Dameron 28, which depicts Dameron obtaining permission before the battle commenced, while in the base command center. [7]
