Eye of Webbish Bog

A Force-sensitive Sirroning being, the Eye of Webbish Bog, made its home on the planet of Mustafar. Existing in symbiosis with a blind giant, it resided in a lake close to the Corvax Fen. During the Galactic Civil War, it crossed paths with the Sith Lord Darth Vader when Emperor Palpatine punished Vader for his past failings. As Vader struggled to survive and defend himself against Ochi of Bestoon, a Sith assassin dispatched by his Sith Master, he used the Force to awaken the Eye. This led to a confrontation where the Eye bombarded Vader with questions about his history before gifting him a Sith wayfinder to locate the hidden Sith world of Exegol.

Many years following Vader's death, the Eye of Webbish Bog encountered Supreme Leader Kylo Ren of the First Order, Vader's grandson, amidst the war between the First Order and the Resistance. After slaughtering the Alazmec of Winsit alongside his forces, Ren was confronted by the Eye. The Eye claimed Vader had entrusted it with guarding Vader's wayfinder and, deeming Ren worthy after he destroyed the artifact's protectors, directed the Supreme Leader to the artifact's location.

Biography

Confrontation with Darth Vader

After the [Duel on Cloud City](/article/duel_on_cloud_city], the Sith Lord Darth Vader inadvertently woke the Eye of the Webbish Bog on Mustafar. This occurred while Vader was battling Ochi of Bestoon, a Sith assassin sent by Darth Sidious, his Sith Master, to kill Vader as punishment for his previous failures. As Vader attempted to approach Ochi to discern the Emperor's plans, the Eye of Webbish Bog summoned him using the Force, demanding to know the source of the insistent shouting and inquiries. Ochi sensed the Eye's presence, noting that Vader had defied the Emperor's prohibition against using the Force for survival. However, Vader asserted that the Eye was calling him from a cave. Ochi tried to prevent Vader from reaching the Eye by blocking the cave entrance with rocks, but Vader managed to enter. From a distance, the Eye informed Vader that he was uncertain of the questions he wished to ask and would not comprehend the answers he would receive, mocking him by stating that the Sith's fury could not solve its riddles.

Ochi abandoned Darth Vader in the cave, believing that no one who met the Eye of Webbish Bog ever returned. As lava fleas attacked Vader, the Eye questioned whether he was a fierce warrior and why he believed he could easily defeat his enemies. Vader killed a large lava flea and asked why the Eye had summoned him. The Eye countered by questioning whether Vader believed he was chosen for a special destiny over other Force-sensitives with similar abilities. This triggered flashbacks of Vader's former Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi, Emperor Palpatine, and his son Luke Skywalker, reminding him of his destiny as the Chosen One.

The Eye inquired whether Vader would have chosen to be chosen or to make his own choice if given the option, while simultaneously setting a roggwart against the Sith Lord, who easily killed it using a piece of skin from a lava flea. Enraged, Vader demanded to know if the Eye served his Sith Master, seeking to uncover Sidious's secret plans and their location. He threatened to destroy the Eye if it refused to answer, opening the chamber where the Eye rested above the blind giant with whom it shared a symbiosis.

The Eye questions Vader's motives, changing the giant's appearance through the Force

The Eye of Webbish Bog mocked Vader, asking what he needed or wanted to know and whether he remembered what he desired. This triggered flashbacks of Vader saving Darth Sidious's life, Sidious revealing that Luke Skywalker was Anakin Skywalker's offspring, and Sidious offering Luke the chance at Cloud City to join and help him overthrow the Emperor. The Eye then urged Vader to search his feelings to find the answer. Furious, Vader struck a rock platform, causing it to collapse and send him into the lava pool where the Eye and the giant resided. Vader warned the Eye that he was tired of its lies and demanded what he had come for.

The Eye repeated its questions, using the Force to transform the giant's appearance into Anakin Skywalker, Luke Skywalker, and Darth Sidious. It asked Vader if anyone would care about his choices if he was chosen. Vader, approaching the Eye, declared that he had made his decision and that the Eye would care. The Eye laughed and had the giant emerge from the lava pool, presenting Vader with a Sith wayfinder while musing that it had given him questions instead of answers. Leaving him with one final question, the Eye asked whether Vader believed he had passed or failed its test. Ultimately, Vader departed from the cave.

Vader's Summons

The Eye later summoned Vader again, alerting him to the approaching storm in the Dark side. Visions of the past, present, and future were shown to him by the Eye.

Kylo Ren's Encounter

In 35 ABY, during the war between the First Order and the Resistance, Supreme Leader Kylo Ren, Vader's grandson, arrived on Mustafar seeking his grandfather's Sith wayfinder to locate the long-deceased Emperor Palpatine, who had announced his return from death. Upon landing on the fiery planet, Ren and a squad of stormtroopers engaged the Sith cultists known as the Alazmec of Winsit in combat before encountering the Eye of Webbish Bog, who emerged with the blind giant from a lake near Corvax Fen. The Eye introduced itself to Kylo Ren, stating that it possessed what he sought. Ren attempted to use a mind trick on the Eye to obtain the wayfinder immediately, but the Eye laughed and revealed that it was immune to Force tricks, mentioning that Vader had tasked it with guarding the Sith artifact.

The Eye of Webbish Bog warned Kylo Ren that Mustafar was a place of deception and that he would confront his true self if he continued on his current path, as he had been pursuing the wayfinder for some time. Noticing Ren's growing impatience, the Eye stated that, in accordance with Vader's wishes, Ren had earned the wayfinder by defeating its protectors. The blind giant then raised its enormous hand from the water, pointing towards a small island in the lake. As Ren examined the wayfinder, the Eye informed him that it would guide him through the Unknown Regions to the hidden Sith world of [Exegol](/article/exegol], where Palpatine was concealed. Startled, Ren turned around after staring at the wayfinder, only to find that the Eye of Webbish Bog and the blind giant had vanished beneath the lake's surface, as if nothing lived there at all.

Behind the scenes

The Eye of Webbish Bog made an appearance in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker: Expanded Edition by Rae Carson, which is the novelization of the 2019 film Star Wars: Episode IX The Rise of Skywalker, the concluding chapter of the Star Wars sequel trilogy.

According to Neal Scanlan, the creative supervisor for creature and special make-up effects, Jake Lunt Davies, a creature concept designer, created the Eye's design early in the development of The Rise of Skywalker. J.J. Abrams, the director, gave his approval to the design and requested that it be included in the film. This led the special effects team to create the character, which was then filmed on location in a lake at Black Park, which is located close to Pinewood Studios. Although the scene was filmed, it was cut because of concerns about the film's length. Scanlan stated in an interview with the website Collider that the scene provided an explanation that was too long for information that could have been explained more succinctly. Scanlan did, however, express his interest in revisiting the design of the Eye of Webbish Bog for future Star Wars projects, such as the television series The Mandalorian.

The Eye of Webbish Bog was referred to as the "Oracle" in the concept art.
