Symbiosis

Midi-chlorian homeworld The Force connected midi-chlorians and sentient beings in a symbiotic relationship; living beings contributed to the cosmic Force. A mutually advantageous connection between living organisms is known as symbiosis. These relationships were described as symbiotic, and the participants were termed symbionts. Species involved in symbiosis faced potential death if separated, as they relied on each other for survival. On the planet Naboo, the Gungan species thrived in a harmonious symbiotic relationship with their underwater natural environment in the city of Otoh Gunga. Conversely, the Naboo humans threatened the planet's ecosystems by extracting plasma beneath their settlements, particularly in the capital city of Theed. Despite this, Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn believed the Gungans and Naboo formed a symbiotic circle, where events impacting one group would affect the other. This was evident during the Trade Federation invasion when they jointly suffered the occupation of their shared world.

In a similar vein, midi-chlorians, microscopic organisms residing within the bloodstream of sentient beings, existed in symbiosis, mirroring how the energy of all life, known as the Living Force, flowed into the Cosmic Force. Originating from the Wellspring of Life, midi-chlorians empowered sentient beings attuned to the Force to perceive the Cosmic Force's will and wield seemingly impossible powers. The Jedi, Force-sensitive individuals, dedicated themselves to serving all life through the light side of the Force, striving for symbiosis and balance among the lifeforms of the galaxy. When the Sith endangered the natural balance of the galaxy, governed from the Core Worlds under the democracy of the Galactic Republic, the Jedi worked to counteract this menace.

Master Qui-Gon Jinn emphasized attuning oneself to the Living Force and embracing the present moment. He trusted his instincts regarding Anakin Skywalker, the boy he encountered on Tatooine during the Naboo crisis, believing him to be the prophesied Chosen One destined to restore equilibrium to the Force. Despite the Jedi High Council's reservations—acknowledging the boy's immense Force potential due to his unprecedented midi-chlorian count but noting the dark side of the Force's influence clouding the future—Jinn's apprentice, Obi-Wan Kenobi, trained Skywalker in the Jedi Order's ways. The Dark Lord of the Sith, Darth Sidious, secretly Senator Palpatine of Naboo, manipulated Queen Padmé Amidala into calling for a Vote of No Confidence against Republic Chancellor Finis Valorum. This led to Palpatine's ascension to Chancellor, overseeing the ensuing Clone Wars. Palpatine further exploited Anakin Skywalker's vulnerabilities, seducing him to the dark side. Skywalker transformed into the Sith Lord Darth Vader, plunging the Republic into the dictatorship of the Galactic Empire and throwing the galaxy into imbalance and pervasive fear.

Fungoid symbionts served as toxin-detecting epaulets worn by General Yiv the Benevolent. On Mustafar, the Eye of Webbish Bog and the blind giant were intertwined in a symbiotic bond. The Eye had communicated with both Darth Vader and his grandson, Kylo Ren. Chelli Lona Aphra and Sana Starros pilfered a nest of parasitic abersyn symbiotes from Aphra's doctoral advisor, Toob-Nix, using them to blackmail him into granting Aphra her doctorate.

Behind the scenes

In reality, "symbiosis" broadly describes any sustained biological interaction between distinct species. This can be mutualism, where both benefit; commensalism, where one benefits and the other is unaffected; or parasitism, where one benefits at the expense of the other. George Lucas, the creator of Star Wars, explained that the Star Wars saga centers on symbiosis. It advocates for compassion to maintain harmony with others, the broader world, and a greater "force" by embracing the "light."
