Unidentified Ewok chief

An Ewok leader held the position of authority in an Ewok settlement situated on the woodland satellite of Endor circa 19 BBY. This Ewok and their community were constantly threatened by a colossal creature known as the Beast in the Mouth of the Mountain. During the final rotation of the Clone Wars, a galactic conflict in which the Ewoks had no part, the mechanical legions of the Separatist Alliance landed on the woodland satellite during a phase of the conflict referred to as the Outer Rim Sieges. The mechanical legions established a base on the satellite, but were ultimately discovered by the soldier legions of the Galactic Republic.

The Republic dispatched a unit of soldier units to the woodland satellite, but communications with them were soon lost. Upon the arrival of a Republic air transport to investigate, the Ewok leader deployed their scouts to observe the new Republic forces. Upon their return, they brought with them the Jedi warrior Aayla Secura, who had accompanied the soldiers. The leader requested that Secura confront and defeat the Beast in the Mouth of the Mountain, as it was responsible for the demise of her soldier units and the destruction of the mechanical units. Secura accepted the task and engaged the creature, slaying it in combat.

Biography

The Ewok chief records the battle between Aayla Secura and the Beast.

At some point during the concluding eras of the Galactic Republic, an Ewok male rose to the leadership position of an Ewok settlement located on the woodland satellite of Endor. However, all was not peaceful, as a massive entity posed a threat to the settlement, residing nearby in a mountain cave. They named it the Beast in the Mouth of the Mountain. Meanwhile, the rest of the galaxy was consumed by an event known as the Clone Wars. During the final rotation of the conflict, 19 BBY, the mechanical legions of the Separatist Alliance arrived on the woodland satellite as part of a phase in the conflict known as the Outer Rim Sieges. The mechanical units constructed a base on the satellite, but were eventually discovered by the soldier legions of the Republic. The Republic, in response to the remote base, deployed a soldier reconnaissance squad to scout the base. The soldier units arrived on the satellite and eventually located the mechanical unit base. A struggle ensued, but it was swiftly interrupted by the appearance of the Beast in the Mouth of the Mountain. Both the mechanical units and the soldiers were completely eliminated, as their energy weapons were ineffective against the Beast.

The Beast had annihilated the mechanical units, while seizing the bodies of the soldier units, leaving their protective gear behind. The Ewok leader personally investigated the carnage and retrieved a damaged soldier unit head covering, which he used to adorn a staff. With the reconnaissance squad having lost contact, however, the Republic sent another exploration team to determine what had occurred. This time, the Republic dispatched Jedi Commander Aayla Secura along with her soldier unit commander Bly. The Ewok leader, in response to the new arrivals, deployed several Ewok scouts to investigate. Upon arriving, Secura ventured into the woods alone to investigate the disappearance of the reconnaissance squad. She encountered a B1 combat unit, and swiftly removed its appendages with her energy blade. However, before she could gather any information, the leader's Ewok scouts apprehended Secura, using venom projectiles, and the combat unit.

Bringing the two back to the settlement, the Ewoks waited for Secura to awaken, as the venom had rendered her unconscious, while they explained their situation to the combat unit, as the combat unit could understand the Ewok language. When Secura awoke, she first noticed the leader's soldier unit head covering adorned staff and quickly suspected the Ewoks of eliminating her soldiers. The combat unit quickly diffused the confrontation by explaining what the Ewoks had told him about the Beast in the Mouth of the Mountain. The Ewoks had captured Secura as they believed her to be a forest spirit, sent to aid them in defeating the Beast. Secura decided to accept the mission to dispatch the beast, and the Ewok leader provided an explorer to guide her to the beast's lair. Secura also brought the unit with her, strapping him to her back against his will. The Ewoks guided her to the mountain where the beast resided and began to scale the mountain as the explorer waited for her below.

Arriving at the mouth of the cave that served as the Beast's lair, Secura entered with her energy blade drawn and soon found the skeletal remains of the soldier units. The beast attacked moments afterwards and destroyed the combat unit with a massive foot. Aayla Secura managed to defeat the beast by cutting stalactites off of the roof of the cave, which then impaled the giant arachnid Beast and killed it. Secura left the mountain, leaving the Ewoks to recover the unit's cranium. The Ewok leader received the cranium and created a new staff with it. As the Republic air transport departed the woodland satellite, the leader was well into a painting that recounted the battle between Secura, the unit, and the Beast, forever cementing the event in Ewok history.

Personality and traits

The Ewok was dedicated to his settlement to lead it in times of trouble, such as the lifespan of the Beast that they feared. The Ewok believed in forest spirits, and believed Aayla Secura to be one upon sighting her. The Ewok believed that sending Secura to fight the Beast would be the correct choice of action in handling the Beast, and in the end his course of action proved successful. The Ewok would also record events of Ewok history through painting.

The Ewok was covered dark pelt and had dark skin and dark orbs. He adorned himself with an ornate headdress constructed from feathers and the skull of an animal.

Behind the scenes

The Ewok first appeared in What Goes Up..., a short graphic novel collected in Star Wars: Clone Wars Adventures Volume 5 and written and illustrated by the Fillbach Brothers. The events of the graphic novel were later referenced in The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia, by Daniel Wallace, Pablo Hidalgo, Stephen J. Sansweet and Bob Vitas.
