Unidentified small animal

A certain type of small animal inhabited a planet located within Wild Space; this planet was the location where the Chiss Mitth'raw'nuruodo was exiled. These creatures were utilized by Thrawn to smuggle explosives beyond the guarded boundaries of an Imperial settlement.

Biology and appearance

These creatures possessed a quadrupedal form, characterized by brown fur and striking red eyes. Their bodies and tails were covered in fur.

Behavior

This species exhibited nocturnal behavior and demonstrated a strong attraction to fermented and crushed pyussh berries.

History

The creatures originated from a planet situated in Wild Space. In approximately 15 BBY, the Imperial Venator-Class Star Destroyer named Strikefast arrived at their home planet in search of lawbreakers. Mitth'raw'nuruodo, of the Chiss, who was in exile on the planet, employed a meticulously positioned monofilament line to destroy a V-wing starfighter. He then proceeded to pilfer the pilot's comlink and blaster power packs, stuffing the flight suit with a mixture of grass, foliage, and fermented pyussh berries. These berries were subsequently brought into the Imperial encampment, where they were crushed for analysis. Thrawn then attached the stolen power packs to a number of these diminutive animals and released them near the encampment, where they were drawn to the berries within. The animals successfully transported the explosive power packs past the camp's sentry perimeter, at which point Thrawn detonated them. He later replicated this strategy to assault some stormtroopers located inside the camp. Following his capture aboard the Strikefast, Thrawn elucidated his methods to Colonel Mosh Barris and Captain Voss Parck, referring to the creatures as "small animals of the night."

Behind the scenes

These animals were initially referenced in Timothy Zahn's novel titled Thrawn, released in 2017 as the inaugural book in the Star Wars: Thrawn trilogy. Their first visual depiction occurred in the first issue of Star Wars: Thrawn, a 2018 comic adaptation of the novel, featuring illustrations by Luke Ross and published under the Marvel Comics imprint.
