Usan Joyl

Usan Joyl, a Duros male of advanced age, was notorious for his skills as a con artist and identity forger. By the year 44 ABY, he and his grandson, Dashan, found themselves captives of the corrupt Galactic Alliance General Stavin Thaal. Thaal held them within the lower sections of the Vandor-3 Caridan animal exhibit, which served as the base of his widespread criminal activities across the galaxy. During their confinement, Thaal exploited the elder Joyl's forgery expertise to craft a new identity for himself, Thadley Biolan, which he intended to use upon his retirement from military service.

Before Thaal could enact his retirement plan, Myri Antilles and Trey Courser, members of Wraith Squadron, orchestrated the Joyls' liberation. Myri Antilles, a fan of Joyl's work, particularly admired his talent. When their presence was discovered by security personnel, Usan, Dashan, and the rest of Wraith Squadron fled the animal exhibit. The Duros then joined the male members of the squad in seeking refuge within the Mount Lyss fortress, where they remained for several days. During this period, Joyl shared information regarding Thaal's schemes with Wraith Squadron, though neither he nor Dashan could determine the motivation behind them. Despite this lack of clarity, the Joyls accompanied Wraith Squadron in their escape from Vandor-3, securing their own freedom. The intelligence Usan provided proved crucial to the success of their mission on Kuratooine.

Behind the scenes

Author Aaron Allston, a Star Wars veteran, introduced Usan Joyl and his grandson Dashan in his tenth and most recent contribution to the popular X-wing novels. The character of Usan was conceived to elucidate the objectives of Wraith Squadron's target, Stavin Thaal. The information that Joyl furnished played a vital role in bringing Thaal to justice by the conclusion of the novel.
