Utalir was a Mikkian woman, a Force-sensitive individual, who belonged to the Path of the Open Hand cult. She resided at their compound located on the world of Dalna. Back in 382 BBY, at the age of nine years, she was among the Path's Littles, cared for by Marda Ro, another member of the Path.
During that same year, while distributing flowers alongside Ro at a station within the market of the Dalnan city of Ferdan, another Little named Jerid playfully taunted Utalir. He commented that her [yellow](/article/color] head tendrils possessed greater beauty than the flowers, and speculated about the potential rewards the Path might receive if they were to offer her as a freely given present. Following a brief visit by a Jedi to their station, she inquired with the other Littles about the identity of a Jedi, to which Jerid responded that they were warriors who engaged in combat against monsters.
Later that year, when the Path's compound faced the threat of inundation, the Littles found shelter with Elders Old Waiden and Mabel Wiss. She and Jerid even took on the responsibility of caring for three young children throughout the ordeal.
Because of her latent Force-sensitivity, a fact unknown to both Utalir and the rest of the Path, she became the target of a Nameless during the tragic Night of Sorrow. However, she was successfully rescued by Marda and her cousin, Yana Ro.
