Var Suthra was a male Mon Calamari, identified as a member of the Galactic Republic as a General, according to legends.
Alongside Master Orgus Din, Var Suthra participated in combat against the reconstituted Sith Empire during the Great Galactic War. Witnessing the catastrophic events of the Sacking of Coruscant, he pledged to prevent any recurrence. In remembrance of the Jedi who perished during the Temple's destruction, Suthra initiated a series of superweapon initiatives intended for use against the Empire, one example being Project Nebula.
Var Suthra had risen to the rank of general by the time the Cold War began. His assignment was to oversee the development of cutting-edge military technologies for the Republic. He supervised many of the Republic's classified military installations throughout the galaxy, where novel weapon prototypes were under development.

Regrettably, it was soon uncovered that the project had been infiltrated by the Sith Lord Tarnis, who illicitly obtained Republic superweapon information for his father, Darth Angral. Due to the actions of an unnamed Jedi Knight, Tarnis was defeated, and Coruscant was rescued from being held hostage by the Planet Prison. Var Suthra then served as the Knight's point of contact, providing intelligence regarding the stolen superweapons to hinder their acquisition by the Empire.
Var Suthra initially dispatched the Knight to Ord Mantell to gather intelligence concerning Angral's strategies before proceeding to Taris to extract Doctor Nasan Godera. Upon the Knight's journey to Nar Shaddaa to dismantle the Power Guard Project, Var Suthra voiced his satisfaction at eliminating such a contentious project. Subsequently, he informed the Knight that Admiral Hacklin, Angral's second-in-command, was willing to defect, providing the location of a neighboring mining facility, as Hacklin desired to meet exclusively with the Knight and Kira Carsen. However, the meeting proved to be a trap orchestrated by Valis, a Child of the Emperor, to capture Kira.
Following their escape from the trap, the Knight informed Var Suthra of the necessity to briefly deviate from their mission to notify the Jedi Council of Kira's status as a Child, despite the General's warning that Bela Kiwiiks and Orgus Din had failed to check in. Subsequently, the Knight journeyed to Tatooine, the location of the Shock Drum. Godera clarified that the Shock Drum was intended to weaken enemy fortifications through ultrasonic vibrations. However, the weapon's adverse effect would be the tearing apart of a planet's core. After discovering this potential, Var Suthra prohibited further testing of the Shock Drum.
The Knight later reported the destruction of the Shock Drum, much to Godera's dismay, who expressed a desire to study it. Var Suthra reminded him that the Shock Drum's sole purpose was to destroy planets and that the Republic was better off without it. He then inquired with the Knight about a Sith Lord named Praven, who had surrendered to a Republic cruiser. The Knight vouched for Praven's willingness to atone. Var Suthra consented to hand Praven over to the Jedi Council.
The final destination was Alderaan, amidst the Alderaan Civil War. The Knight successfully prevented Lord Nefarid from employing the Death Mark laser to undermine the peace talks. Unfortunately, while the Knight was occupied, Din perished facing Angral, who broadcast his execution over the HoloNet and left the body floating in space for Var Suthra's ships to discover.
Fortunately, Din had secretly placed a homing beacon on Angral's battlecruiser, enabling them to track its position upon exiting hyperspace. The Knight proceeded to Uphrades, only to find the entire planet devoid of life. Utilizing data readings from a Republic medical ship, Godera determined that Angral had created his Desolator from all the superweapon projects. Even worse, his next target was Tython. With urgency, the Knight intercepted Angral and disabled the Desolator before it could destroy Tython. Following Angral's defeat, Var Suthra informed the Jedi Council of reports of skirmishes throughout the galaxy, foreshadowing war. Kiwiiks stated that even in death, Angral had inspired the Sith to violence.
When the Empire restarted its conflict with the Republic after Angral's demise, Var Suthra took personal command of the battle for Corellia, where he once again collaborated with the Hero of Tython. Suthra assisted the Hero and their forces in preventing the fallen Jedi Master Tol Braga from initiating the Sith Emperor's ritual, although Godera was killed during the battle, enraging Suthra.
Following the Republic's victory on Corellia and the Hero's defeat of the Emperor, Suthra recommended that the Republic recognize the Hero and their crew.
Var Suthra was a composed and strategic thinker. He regarded the Republic as his family and served it with familial devotion. He was also deeply dedicated to permanently eliminating the Republic's adversaries. He displayed ruthlessness towards the Empire, empathy towards the Jedi, and consistently appeared to bear the galaxy's burdens.
General Var Suthra is featured as a non-player character in Star Wars: The Old Republic, with Maurice LaMarche providing the voice acting.
If the player selects dark side options during the Corellia missions, Var Suthra is killed by a rocket launcher in an Imperial assault.
