Valis

Valis, a male Human and a Child of the Emperor, served as an agent carrying out the will of the Sith Emperor. Born during the Great Galactic War that pitted the Galactic Republic against the Sith Empire, Valis spent his formative years at the Sith Academy located on the planet of Korriban, becoming a devoted follower of the Emperor. In the midst of the tense Cold War, he received orders to recapture the former Child, Kira Carsen, after the Emperor discovered she was still alive. Adopting the guise of Imperial Admiral Hacklin, Valis successfully drew Carsen, now a Jedi Padawan, and her Master to a mining facility situated within the Unknown Regions. However, his attempt to seize Carsen culminated in a duel that resulted in his own death.

Biography

The male Human known as Valis entered the world sometime during the Great Galactic War fought between the Galactic Republic and the Sith Empire. As an infant, he was separated from his parents and taken to the planet of Korriban, where he was initiated into the Sith Academy. Alongside other initiates like Kira Carsen, Suri, and Tannac, Valis underwent instruction in wielding the dark side of the Force, and he was brought before the Sith Emperor on several occasions. By his teenage time, Valis had evolved into a Child of the Emperor, essentially an extension of the Emperor's will, and was infused with a portion of the Sith ruler's strength. Nevertheless, in 3653 BBY, Carsen, his fellow Child, fled Korriban, driven by her fear of the Emperor's influence on her mind, and subsequently aligned herself with the Jedi Order.

In 3643 BBY, the Emperor became aware of Carsen's continued existence when the former Child was apprehended by Sith Lord Darth Angral aboard the Ord Mantell Orbital Station. Carsen managed to escape her captors with assistance from her Master, who was once a Padawan under Jedi Master Orgus Din. The Emperor then tasked Valis with bringing Carsen back into his fold. Impersonating Imperial Admiral Hacklin, Valis made contact with General Var Suthra of the Republic Military, claiming a desire to defect, but only if he could meet with Carsen, whom Hacklin claimed to have encountered during her capture by Angral. Subsequently, Valis journeyed via starship to an asteroid mining facility located in the Unknown Regions, the location Suthra had designated for the defection. Valis exited his vessel and concealed himself behind several cargo containers within the hangar, observing as Carsen and her Jedi Knight instructor arrived aboard their ship. As the two Jedi approached his ship, Valis emerged from his hiding spot and greeted them.

Introducing himself and apologizing for the deception involving Hacklin's name, the Sith was immediately recognized by Carsen, who amused him by instantly warning her Master to attack. Valis proceeded to inform the Knight about Carsen's true origins, cautioning the former Child that the Emperor sought her return, and requested that her Master allow him to resolve the matter peacefully with Carsen. However, the Knight refused, and Carsen impulsively attacked her "sibling" with her double-bladed lightsaber. Valis drew his own lightsaber to his hand and activated the purple blade just in time to parry Carsen's strike, then used the Force to hurl her backward. Carsen's Master then joined the fray, and Valis unleashed bolts of violet Force lightning at his adversaries as the three dueled back and forth across the hangar. Despite his considerable Force abilities, Valis was unable to overcome the combined might of Carsen and the Knight, and their duel concluded when Valis was struck down by the Jedi.

Personality and traits

With fair hair and a fair complexion, complemented by brown eyes, Valis possessed an arrogant demeanor and unwavering confidence in his superior strength and power. Despite this, Valis exhibited refinement and courtesy, willingly offering the Knight passage if he allowed him to peacefully reclaim Carsen—but he remained resolute in his mission to retrieve the wayward Child, regardless of the consequences. Valis held his status as a Child of the Emperor in high regard, genuinely viewing the Emperor as his paternal figure.

Powers and abilities

Having been trained at the Sith Academy, Valis possessed considerable Force abilities and proficiency in utilizing the dark side. He readily employed offensive Force powers during combat, using telekinesis to propel his opponents across the battlefield, as well as energy blasts and Force lightning during his confrontation with Carsen and the Knight. Valis wielded a lightsaber with a purple blade, distinguished by a talon-like ornament at the base of the hilt and three evenly spaced metal blades affixed to the emitter.

Behind the scenes

Valis made his debut in Star Wars: The Old Republic, a video game developed by BioWare and released by LucasArts in 2011. Voiced by Nicholas Boulton, Valis serves as the antagonist in the Jedi Knight class mission entitled "The Defector," which players undertake after completing the class storylines on the planets Taris and Nar Shaddaa. Irrespective of the dialogue choices made by the player during the conversation with Valis, the player will be compelled to duel the Child, resulting in his death during combat.
