Tol Braga

A male Kel Dor Jedi Master named Tol Braga served the Jedi Order, holding a strong conviction in the value of peaceful resolutions.

Biography

Master Tol Braga, often respectfully called "the conscience of the Jedi Order," was a deeply thoughtful scholar, a strategist of great wisdom, and a committed pacifist. His duel with Sith Lord Darth Sajar, a member of the Empire's Dark Council, which ended in a draw, stands as his most significant accomplishment as a Jedi. More impressively, he then swayed Sajar to forsake the dark side and undergo training as a Jedi, subsequently taking him as his Padawan.

While most Padawans thought that Master Braga's aversion to war stemmed from his experiences during the Great Galactic War, the truth is that it began much earlier in his life. As a young Jedi, his initial assignment involved intervening in a brutal civil war on Duro. Witnessing the terrible consequences of people turning against each other with weapons profoundly impacted Braga, forever reshaping his perspective.

Learning of the Children of the Emperor

During the period known as the Cold War, Braga was away from Tython when Satele convened the Council. This was prompted by Padawan Kira Carsen's revelation that she was born a Sith, specifically one of the Children of the Emperor. Although Master Jaric Kaedan deemed Carsen a threat and advocated for her imprisonment, Braga, communicating via hologram, contended that she deserved a chance to prove her worth as a Jedi. He referenced his success in redeeming Sajar, which unveiled the existence of the Children. The future Hero of Tython, Carsen's Master, supported Braga's argument, leading to Carsen's continued service as a Jedi.

Attempted capture of the Sith Emperor

Tol Braga attempts to resist the Sith Emperor

Following the unsuccessful assault on Tython by Darth Angral, Braga spearheaded a highly improbable plan to capture the Sith Emperor, transport him to Tython, and redeem him to the light side. Jedi Knight Jomar Chul, a member of Braga's team, was shot down over Tatooine while scouting the Dromund Kaas system. Chul later contacted Braga, informing him that the Hero of Tython had rescued him. This news intrigued the Kel Dor, interpreting it as a sign from the Force indicating the mission's potential success. He instructed Chul to provide the Hero with his sensor recordings for delivery to Tython, while he awaited medical transport.

Upon their initial meeting, Braga outlined his plan to the Hero and dispatched them to Balmorra to assist Warren Sedoru in procuring an alien cloaking device, similar to the one concealing the Emperor's fortress. Subsequently, he sent the Hero to Quesh, following Sajar's disappearance. The Hero reported saving a Republic base, but also revealed Sajar's commission of war crimes against prisoners and his subsequent surrender to the Jedi Council. Braga was dismayed by his Padawan's fall and requested discretion until a thorough investigation could be conducted. The Hero also mentioned encountering the Emperor's Wrath, who seemed more interested in the Hero than Sajar.

After the Hero and Jedi Knight Leeha Narezz uncovered the fortress schematics on Hoth, Braga convened his team on Tython to strategize their infiltration. He expressed confidence in their mission's success, citing his previous success with Sajar, and dismissed the Emperor as "just another Sith." However, the Jedi Council and Chul interrupted their meeting. Chul revealed a vision he had during a healing meditation, foreseeing the Hero's fall to the dark side and subsequent alliance with the Sith. He urged that he replace the Hero on the mission. Braga disregarded his warning, emphasizing the fluidity of the future and the Council's policy against judging solely on visions. Masters Satele Shan and Bela Kiwiiks affirmed their trust in the Hero's loyalty, thereby approving the mission. Frustrated by their refusal to heed his warning, Chul stormed out, while Master Jaric Kaedan implored Braga to reconsider. Nevertheless, the Kel Dor remained steadfast in his belief in the plan's success.

Fall to the dark side

However, upon infiltrating the Emperor's fortress and confronting the supreme Sith, the Emperor, addressing Braga by name, derided him for his hubris. The Emperor then unleashed a surge of lightning that subdued the Jedi, his overwhelming influence corrupting them and turning them into his servants. Braga later managed to momentarily break free of the Emperor's control but then realized that he allowed pride to blind him to the Sith's true nature.

Now willingly serving the Sith Emperor, Braga's encounter with the Emperor had revealed the nature of true evil and a power he had severely underestimated. Recognizing that his pride had obscured the Emperor's might, Braga knowingly succumbed to the dark side, viewing it as a deserved punishment. Master Braga's failure to redeem the Emperor shattered his spirit, leading him to surrender to nihilistic despair as his faith and pride crumbled.

Shortly thereafter, Tol Braga was dispatched by the Emperor to Corellia, a planet under attack by the Sith Empire. Aboard the Eclipse, Tol Braga encountered the Hero once more. The Jedi Knight attempted to liberate him and prevent the fallen Jedi Master from causing mass casualties on the planet. The Hero eventually confronted Braga aboard the Imperial battlecruiser above Capitol Square, where the Kel Dor had set his ship's reactors to overload which would have, at its present altitude, flatten the sector and scatter harmful radiation for hundreds of kilometers. The Hero pleaded with Braga to break free of the Emperor's influence, but Braga declared that he had already done so and had witnessed the galaxy's inherent corruption. Braga engaged the Hero and was defeated which freed him from the Emperor's power. The Hero then quickly prevented the reactors from overloading. As the Hero called General Var Suthra to confirm their success, Braga stated that the galaxy's suffering had only been prolonged and bemoaned that nothing the Hero did mattered. The Hero then finally understood him: he never faced failure until their mission to the Emperor's fortress. Braga admitted that while the Emperor's ritual might have been stopped, the Sith Lord would try again and again until he completed it. He willingly gave up the Emperor's coordinates and encouraged the Hero to face him and see how pointless their struggles have been before asking to be put out of his misery. The Knight implored him to let go of his past and become a better person, appealing to the good that's still inside him. Remembering the confidence that he once felt and allowing hope to swell in his heart, Braga accepted that perhaps the Emperor can be defeated and agreed to consider the offer and returned back to Tython to be redeemed.

However, it was later believed that Braga was killed by agents working for the Star Cabal.

Powers and abilities

Braga was one of the most powerful and determined Jedi of his era. During his battle with the formidable Hero of Tython, Braga used a Force-push to repel the Jedi during a mid-air leap. Tol Braga then ripped a large console from its foundation and threw it towards his opponent right afterwards with his powers. He also possessed remarkable stamina, as evidenced by his ability to withstand a three-day duel against the Sith Lord Darth Sajar, a member of the Empire's Dark Council.
