Velko Jahen was a female Soikan who worked as an aide for the Galactic Republic head of the Starlight Beacon space station during the time known as the High Republic Era. Upon her arrival at the station, Velko's experiences included adjusting to her new position and her initial encounters with the Jedi of the Jedi Order.
Sometime following the Slaughter on Daivak, Jahen approached Estala Maru while he was in conversation with Jedi Knight Keeve Trennis, informing them of an active Nihil assault within the Rseik sector. Maru expressed his gratitude for the information and delegated the mission to Trennis.
Following the fall of Starlight Beacon, Velko was discovered among the survivors and recognized by Jedi Master Avar Kriss.
By the year 229 BBY, Commander Jahen was assigned to the Gios Longbeam cruiser, serving under the command of Jedi Master Keeve Trennis. She notified Trennis to proceed to the Gios's flight deck because they were receiving a transmission from Coruscant.
Velko Jahen's creation was for Star Wars: The High Republic publishing endeavor, with her primary appearances in short stories contained within the Star Wars Insider "Starlight" series, penned by Cavan Scott and Justina Ireland. Her name was initially mentioned, though only her first name, during the initiative's launch event on January 4, 2021, and she subsequently made her debut in the initial segment of the short story "Starlight: First Duty," authored by Scott and published in Star Wars Insider 201 on March 30. Jahen was later depicted visually in the second part of "First Duty" within Star Wars Insider 202 on April 27. On August 31, 2021, Jahen was featured as a character with voice acting in the audio drama The High Republic: Tempest Runner, however, the voice actor did not receive credit.
In spite of the High Republic initiative placing considerable emphasis on the Jedi, the Insider short stories chose to focus on the ordinary individuals residing on Starlight Beacon. As such, Jahen was presented to offer readers the perspective of a character present on the station who lacked prior exposure to the Jedi.
