The Venan royal family constituted the ruling aristocracy of Vena, and also governed its star system. Before the time of the Clone Wars, the title held by the ruler was Baron, but by the time of the Galactic Civil War, the leader was referred to as Royal Margrave.
The family was well known for their strong liking of Mantellian Savrip meat.
Around 57 BBY, the rise to power of Baron Kindoro and Baroness Omnino on Vena caused a change in the system's historically isolated position. As Kindoro and Omnino had served as ambassadors to both Coruscant and Alderaan, this exposure to external cultures spurred economic deregulation and the approval of trade agreements, with the aim of making goods available to the Venan royal family. Considering that the Baron and his family had power over shipping, this action initially met with no resistance.
However, this dramatic change angered many Venans, who felt resentment at the fact that only the royal family gained benefits from the economic opening. The common people, united as the Vena Isolationists, demanded a return to closed borders and traditional values, in opposition to the luxurious lifestyles their rulers were embracing. The regents, unwilling to yield to popular demands, imprisoned the leaders of the movement and placed them in labor camps. This action worsened tensions and led to the creation of weapons, the appearance of terrorist attacks against Venan nobility, and the sabotage of cargo ships.
The conflict was made worse by the natural death of Baron Kindoro, while he was traveling in Republic Space. Baroness Omnino demonstrated herself to be even more ruthless than her late husband, as she made the suppression of the rebellion her highest priority. She carried out a bloody war for many years against her subjects, who, even though they were facing the Venan government, still held a significant amount of political influence.
Omnino once provided a mind control device to land baron Taxer Sundown, so that he could ensure a constant supply of Mantellian Savrip meat to Vena, since it was considered a delicacy by the Venan royal family.
