Viper Sensor Intelligence Systems (VSIS) functioned as a manufacturer of droids, with its headquarters situated on the planet of Vulpter. In the time leading up to the Clone Wars, VSIS found itself in a contentious situation involving sensor technologies with its competitor, Arakyd Industries. This dispute came to an end when Arakyd executed a hostile takeover, thereby acquiring VSIS. Arakyd chose to maintain VSIS as an active entity, repurposing it into a research and development branch, and integrated VSIS's exclusive technologies into its highly popular Viper probe droid.
Located within Viper Tower, a facility based in the city of Hpaq on the planet Vulpter, Viper Sensor Intelligence Systems operated as a droid manufacturing company. Compared to Arakyd Industries, it was a smaller and more recently established enterprise. Until the Arakyd takeover, which resulted in her removal, the company was under the leadership of President Rina Fio. Post-acquisition, Arakyd continued to operate VSIS as a research and development division. At least one member of the Vulptereen species was employed by the company.
The VSIS logo featured an upside-down green triangle with rounded corners, inside of which was a white trapezoid interlocked with a smaller blue triangle.

During the period of the Separatist Crisis, Viper Sensor Intelligence Systems became involved in a disagreement spanning 18 months with its rival, Arakyd Industries. Arakyd claimed that Viper's XPLR-R, a prototype hyperspace-route-mapping and habitation-location unit, had extensively copied the unique designs of Arakyd's probe droid series, and demanded substantial compensation and technological rights from the newer company. However, VSIS prioritized the refinement of the XPLR-R's sophisticated sensor analysis capabilities to such an extent that it neglected its corporate defense requirements.
In 22 BBY, shortly before the Clone Wars began, the conflict was resolved when Arakyd acquired its smaller rival through a forceful takeover. Just before the close of the business day, 60 AAD-4 assault droids, belonging to Arakyd Industries, entered Viper Tower and swiftly neutralized the security units on the ground floor. The remaining VSIS staff were moved to the testing wing, while three XR-37 droid tanks destroyed the upper floors of the building, which housed the accounting and administrative departments. Arakyd continued to operate VSIS as a research and development division, with a garrison stationed at Viper Tower to support the transition.
Following her release from Arakyd custody, Rina Fio, the ousted president of VSIS, stated in a comment to the HoloNet News that the company was pleased that, under new management, Viper would receive the support of the Techno Union's military forces. The Arakyd takeover of VSIS was covered in a HoloNet Business article titled "Sensor Technology Dispute Settled in Takeover," and, leveraging proprietary Viper technology, the company launched the Viper probe droid, which became its most successful product to date.
The original concept for Viper Sensor Intelligence Systems came from HoloNet News Vol. 531 50, a HoloNet News article authored by Pablo Hidalgo and Paul Ens, with illustrations by Joe Corroney. It was released on April 4, 2002.
