During the Unification Wars of the Koros system, Vontaige served under Teta, fighting against the rebels on Kirrek. With Teta's victory in the Unification Wars, Vontaige resumed his position as one of her key advisors. In 5000 BBY, the Sith Empire, under the leadership of Dark Lord of the Sith Naga Sadow, initiated the Great Hyperspace War with a surprise attack on the Galactic Republic. Despite Empress Teta's prior warning, the sheer magnitude of the Sith invasion force appeared overwhelming.
Following the initial outbreak of the Great Hyperspace War on Coruscant, Vontaige was present at a meeting with Teta, Jedi Knight Odan-Urr, Jori Daragon, the hyperspace explorer who first alerted them to the Sith danger, Llaban, the former leader of the Kirrek rebels, and other advisors. During this discussion, Vontaige voiced his concerns about the Koros military's insufficient firepower to effectively defend their worlds. He also criticized Llaban, asserting that he and his rebel forces had already inflicted enough damage. Nevertheless, Teta intervened, allowing Llaban to speak, who then proposed reinforcing Teta's military with his Kirrek rebel army. Teta accepted this offer and assigned Llaban to command his forces on Kirrek.
Empress Teta had Vontaige's complete and utter loyalty. His experiences in the Unification Wars fostered a deep-seated animosity toward Llaban, the leader of the resistance against Teta's rule on Kirrek. He felt strongly that Llaban should not be involved in the conflict with the Sith. Vontaige was anxious about the disparity in size between the Sith fleet and the diminished strength of Koros' navy. Unlike typical Republic soldiers who sported an oval jewel on their helmets, Vontaige's helmet featured a square-shaped jewel, indicating his higher rank.
Vontaige made his debut in the third installment of Tales of the Jedi: The Fall of the Sith Empire, a story arc within the Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi comic book series. The issue was written by Kevin J. Anderson, with illustrations by Dario Carrasco, Jr., and was released in 1996.
