It was typical for Vrethan writing implements to be stamped, with at least one variety bearing a resemblance to the consumable potato, a type of food. At one point in time, newly married Duros couple Etro and Droza Edthatt were taken against their will by Humans from what the pair understood to be the planet named "Urthha." The Edthatts were brought to a gathering there, where they were compelled to consume food. The Duros thought the food looked like Vrethan writing implements, and consequently Etro began to stamp them, which resulted in the party's hostess becoming upset and leaving.
Following this, Etro ate a potato, mistakenly believing it to be another writing implement, leading to the Duros becoming ill and developing collard lesions. The Edthatts' error in identifying the Human food as Vrethan writing implements was later recounted in an article within the August 8, 6094 edition of the The Galactic Gossip publication, which detailed their abduction.
The 1993 publication Monsters and Aliens from George Lucas, which combines creature designs and images from various projects of Star Wars creator George Lucas with original text authored by Bob Carrau, included a mention of Vrethan writing implements. Lucasfilm employee Leland Chee, who is responsible for maintaining the Holocron continuity database, has stated that the information presented in Monsters and Aliens from George Lucas is considered non-canonical within the context of the Star Wars Legends continuity. However, the 2009 reference work The Essential Atlas expanded upon the initial mention of Vrethan writing implements by introducing the Vretha system located in the Mid Rim.
