During the Galactic Civil War, Captain Wankle, a male Human in the Imperial Navy, found himself in command. Stationed near the planet of Sullust, he commanded an Imperial-class Star Destroyer. Wankle's path crossed with that of Sullustan Captain Bungo Bung at some point during this conflict. Wankle ordered the seizure of a significant quantity of Bantha Breakfast Biscuits, a well-known foodstuff from Biscuit Baron, during an inspection of Bung's vessel, the Chubby Gundark.
Weeks later, the Chubby Gundark was encountered once more by Wankle's Star Destroyer. On this occasion, Captain Bung offered no resistance when Wankle took his final crate of Bantha Breakfast Biscuits. Unbeknownst to Wankle, the case's contents were tainted, and on the verge of transforming into a voracious creature referred to as a Giant Amorphous Bantha Breakfast Biscuit.
During the Galactic Civil War, Wankle was an officer in the Imperial navy, a male Human serving the Galactic Empire. He commanded an Imperial-class Star Destroyer, operating from a station near the planet of Sullust located in the Outer Rim Territories. His duties included the inspection of vessels entering and leaving the system. At some point during the Galactic Civil War, Wankle's Star Destroyer intercepted the Chubby Gundark, a Nyubba-class cargo barge driver owned by the SoroSuub Corporation and under the command of Captain Bungo Bung, a Sullustan. Wankle gave the order to inspect the freighter, and the Chubby Gundark was brought aboard the Star Destroyer. Wankle himself oversaw the inspection, and the stormtrooper leading the search reported forty cases of Bantha Breakfast Biscuit from Biscuit Baron onboard. Wankle inquired about the availability of blue sauce to accompany them and, upon receiving confirmation, ordered thirty-nine cases confiscated for a special meal for his men. When 42-RST, Captain Bung's droid, questioned Wankle's actions, he stated that he could do as he pleased and that they were fortunate to be left with anything. Once his men had removed the cargo from the Chubby Gundark, he allowed the vessel to depart.

Two weeks later, the Chubby Gundark was once again intercepted by Wankle's Star Destroyer near Sullust. The vessel was returning from a run to Gastrula, an Outer Rim planet, where Bung and RST-42 had been engaged in a profitable trade in Bantha Breakfast Biscuits with the native Gastrulans. Captain Wankle inspected the Chubby Gundark once more. However, this time, Captain Bung surrendered the single crate of Bantha Breakfast Biscuits he was carrying without protest, apologizing for the lack of blue sauce. Wankle was unaware that the biscuits had been contaminated—the preservatives in the foodstuff had interacted with the stale air in the Chubby Gundark's hold. This combination would eventually spawn a Giant Amorphous Bantha Breakfast Biscuit, a ravenous creature that would devour anything in its path.
Wankle, an Imperial naval officer, had black hair and wore the standard uniform. He was a stern officer who used his authority to bully those weaker than himself, displaying offensive behavior towards non-Humans by using derogatory terms like "mouseman" to refer to Bungo Bung. Despite this, he showed genuine concern for his crew, going as far as to secure a special meal for them.
Jim Anderson created Wankle for the story Bungo n' Rusti Get Carry-Out, which appeared in Star Wars Adventure Journal 11 in 1996. Anderson both wrote and illustrated the story. Originally, Anderson intended to create a series of comic adventures featuring Bungo and Rusti, but the idea was abandoned because Dark Horse Comics held the exclusive comic license. Dark Horse overlooked the publication of Bungo n' Rusti Get Carry-Out because they considered it a one-shot story. However, the character also appeared in the unlicensed Bungo n' Rusti Join the Rebellion?!! Part I and II by Anderson, which can be found on TheForce.net. Anderson revealed on TheForce.Net that Wankle's Star Destroyer was named the Excessive and that it was attacked by a Giant Amorphous Bantha Breakfast Biscuit that evolved from the confiscated biscuits. Wankle lost his ship and his nose in the incident, the latter being replaced by a prosthesis. He was then assigned to command the EF76 Nebulon-B escort frigate Upheaval with the task of tracking down Nien Nunb, a smuggler from Sullust.
