Plot summary

Due to the escalating threat from the Second Imperium and the Dark Jedi training at the Shadow Academy, Luke makes the difficult decision to accelerate his students' education, instructing them to construct and begin utilizing their personal lightsabers. The young Jedi Knights eagerly accept this challenge, but a tragic event occurs when Jacen accidentally wounds Tenel Ka during a sparring session, resulting in the loss of one of her arms. The princess is taken back to Hapes in a state of shock.

Once on Hapes, Tenel Ka is once more subjected to the machinations of her grandmother, Ta'a Chume, as the elderly woman attempts to introduce her to the complexities of Hapan politics and convince her to abandon her Jedi training. Jacen, Jaina, and Lowbacca's subsequent arrival provides a welcome distraction, but it proves short-lived; following a bombing in the royal palace perpetrated by an unknown assailant, Ta'a Chume concludes that their lives are all at risk, leading her and the Jedi trainees to seek refuge on a remote island in the Hapan ocean.

Yet, even in this secluded location, they remain vulnerable; they narrowly avoid another assassination attempt carried out by a band of Bartokk assassins. Upon their return to the mainland, the Queen Mother orders the arrest of Ambassador Yfra, who is revealed to be responsible for the attacks. Tenel Ka reaffirms her commitment to continuing her training, and she journeys back to Yavin 4 with her friends, where she constructs a new lightsaber.

Continuity

  • The book makes the claim that Luke Skywalker had not encountered Brakiss since the former left the Jedi academy. However, in 17 ABY during the events of The New Rebellion novel during the Almanian Uprising, Luke engaged in a duel with Brakiss on Telti.

  • Augwynne Djo is mistakenly identified as the mother of Teneniel Djo, perpetuating the error by stating that she is Tenel Ka's grandmother, rather than her grandmother and great-grandmother, respectively.
