The year 15,500 years Before the Battle of Yavin (BBY) occurred during the Indecta Era within the history of the Galactic Republic. While the expansion of the Republic-known galaxy had largely ceased due to the First Alsakan Conflict, which began fifteen hundred years prior, scouts and explorers eventually resumed their journeys into the outer frontier of space. In 15,500 BBY, Republic scouts encountered the Duinuogwuin species. The scouts, filled with fear, rapidly retreated to Coruscant, only to be followed by hundreds of these "Star Dragons". The Republic planet then suffered an attack, but peace was eventually brokered between the Duinuogwuin philosopher Borz'Mat'oh and the Supreme Chancellor Fillorean. As part of this newfound peace, they jointly founded the University of Coruscant.
The Galactic Republic's rapid expansion throughout the known galaxy had almost completely stopped when the First Alsakan Conflict began in 17,000 BBY. This conflict signaled the start of the Indecta Era for the Republic; however, exploration was later restarted. New sentient species were being discovered on the rimward frontier of known space. The Republic also experienced cultural shifts, including the establishment of the Celebratus Archive on Obroa-skai in 16,782 BBY and the development of the first proto-lightsabers by the Jedi in the years leading up to 15,500 BBY.
During 15,500 BBY, Republic scouts exploring the Outer Rim ventured close to the planet Murkhana. It was there that they first came across the Duinuogwuin, fifty- meter–long "Star Dragons" capable of traversing the vacuum of space and projecting atomic fire from their mouths. This first encounter turned disastrous, as the scouts were overcome by fear. Reacting quickly, they retreated back to Coruscant. The "Star Dragons" misinterpreted this fear and pursued them in large numbers. Upon reaching the Republic capital-world, the Duinuogwuin attacked the planet, causing widespread devastation to the cityscape. Nevertheless, the Republic's Supreme Chancellor Fillorean managed to begin negotiations with the Duinuogwuin philosopher Borz'Mat'oh, successfully establishing peace. As a result of this agreement, they jointly founded the University of Coruscant.
The Duinuogwuin became one of many species that either made contact with or were integrated into the galactic community during the Indecta Era. The peace that Fillorean and Borz'Mat'oh negotiated endured between the Republic and the Duinuogwuin, and some even joined the Jedi Order. One such Star Dragon, named Willm Lywin, went on to establish the Teyan Praxeum on Teya IV in 4600 BBY. Statues of both Fillorean and Borz'Mat'oh were erected on the University of Coruscant's main campus, and the institution itself remained for millennia.

Although the specific year was not mentioned in Coruscant and the Core Worlds, the 2003 Wizards of the Coast roleplaying game supplement was the first to introduce the Duinuogwuin Contention into Star Wars canon. The date was first provided in the 2005 publication The New Essential Chronology, which also included further details about the conflict. 15,500 BBY was later mentioned in both Jedi vs. Sith: The Essential Guide to the Force and The Essential Atlas.
