The 12-page comic titled "Entrenched" appears in Star Wars: Visionaries, and its narrative and artwork are products of Alex Jaeger and M. Zachary Sherman's collaborative efforts.
The Battle of Hoth is depicted through the experiences of Jobin, a young Rebel Corporal. A holographic message intended for his mother is recorded by him, and the message's content mirrors the unfolding events of the story.
As the Rebel forces brace themselves for the incoming Imperial attack, the Empire deploys formidable AT-ATs and Juggernauts. Jobin, alongside his squad, engages in combat within the trenches. A member of his team identifies a group of advancing snowtroopers and an AT-ST targeting the Rebellion's planetary ion cannon. He commands half of his squad, including Jielu, to hold their position in the trenches, while he leads four soldiers in an attempt to reclaim Ion Control. After an unsuccessful attempt to reach Ion Control, he instructs two of his men, Grond and Sora, to outflank the AT-ST, while he, Roj, and another Rebel confront it directly. They successfully destroy the walker and advance toward the ion cannon.
Simultaneously, inside the captured emplacement, the snowtroopers intercept Rebel communications requesting ion support. The Rebel team storms the emplacement, eliminating the Imperials, but suffering the loss of Grond and the unnamed Rebel in the process. After Jobin activates the cannon, his team sets it to self-destruct. The remaining three soldiers fall back to Hangar Bay Seven, only to be confronted by Darth Vader and his forces.
Jobin and his squad retreat to Hangar Bay Ten, where Jobin is wounded by blaster fire. He entrusts his recorded message to Roj. Darth Vader briefly questions him, but Jobin refuses to cooperate. After spitting on Vader's helmet, Jobin is killed. Mon Mothma, Jobin's mother, listens to Jobin's message at the Rebel rendezvous point near Sullust. Crix Madine informs her of his death. She then proceeds to brief the Rebel forces for the Battle of Endor, declaring with unwavering determination: "The Emperor has made a critical error, and the time for our attack has come."
Alex Jaeger and M. Zachary Sherman are credited as the writers of "Entrenched," with Jaeger also serving as the artist. The comic was specifically created for the 2005 graphic novel anthology Star Wars: Visionaries, which was curated by Jeremy Barlow and featured comics from concept artists involved in the prequel trilogy film Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith. Jaeger's initial concept for the comic was to provide context for the line "Imperial troops have entered the base," which is broadcast over Echo Base's intercom in the 1980 film Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back. His goal was to create a narrative centered on the rebel troopers in the trenches on Hoth, while also showcasing elements of the Imperial Army such as AT-ATs, AT-STs, and snowtroopers. Jaeger completed the comic during his free time while maintaining a full-time job.
Despite the Rebels' act of setting the ion cannon to self-destruct in this story, the ion cannon is shown to be operational again during Jaden Korr's mission to Hoth.
On page 69, there is a grammatical error in Vader's dialogue: the word "were" is used instead of "where."
