Accipipteros were sizable, avian-esque reptavians that originated on the world of Dagobah. As aerial hunters, they reigned supreme within the swamp planet's jungle canopy, residing exclusively among the gnarltrees. Bogwings, along with any other animal that ascended to or beyond the treetop canopy, served as their food source.
Sporting a brown hue, accipipteros possessed a lengthy tail, a pair of legs culminating in clawed feet, and a set of wings each featuring three digit-like claws. These diminutive clawed appendages were used to manipulate captured food into their jaws after the creatures were caught with their curved lower mandible. The prey was then devoured while still living.
Within established Star Wars canon, the initial mention of accipipteros occurred in Nexus of Power, a Star Wars Roleplaying sourcebook published by Fantasy Flight Games for the Star Wars: Force and Destiny RPG on March 17, 2016.
These beasts initially appeared in the Star Wars Legends timeline, debuting in the 41st edition of the initial Star Wars comic book series from Marvel Comics, penned by Archie Goodwin with artwork by Al Williamson and Carlos Garzón.
