Storyline Summary

While exploring an unknown planet within Wild Space, the Graf family, accompanied by their droid CR-8R (affectionately called Crater), experience a setback when Milo Graf disappears. His sister, Lina Graf, and CR-8R locate him attempting to pursue local creatures in a puddle. Suddenly, Milo's Kowakian monkey-lizard, Morq, launches an attack on CR-8R. As Milo tries to snare a rabbit using a net, Lina is unexpectedly seized by a creepervine. Milo and Crater respond by tossing her a fusioncutter, enabling her to break free. An argument ensues between Milo and Lina regarding the lost rabbit. Unexpectedly, Crater intercepts an encrypted message from their mother, Rhyssa Graf, prompting them to return to their campsite to check on their parents. Upon arrival, they are dismayed to find their parents and all their possessions gone. Subsequently, they discover a holo-recorder containing footage of their parents surrounded by Stormtroopers. The footage reveals an Imperial Captain named Korda receiving charting data acquired by the Graf parents. When the Grafs request their payment, Captain Korda declines and threatens to seize the information by force. The hologram abruptly ends, and when it resumes, their father, Auric, is shown on the ground, having been assaulted. He reluctantly agrees to Korda's demands and appears to transmit the data to the Imperials via his datapad. Korda then declares the Grafs enslaved, citing the Empire's need for explorers. Finally, Korda orders his Stormtroopers to locate and eliminate the Graf children, as well as destroy the Graf's ship, the Whisper Bird, which is concealed in a nearby cave. Arriving at the cave, they discover Stormtroopers planting explosives to destroy the Whisper Bird. Milo uses a net to ensnare nearby vines, distracting the Stormtrooper commander, who is then captured by creepervines. The Stormtroopers free their commander by shooting the creepervine, only to find the Graf children fleeing into the cave. The Stormtroopers fire at the cave's roof, causing the entrance to collapse. Assuming the children are dead, they depart. Milo and Lina locate the Whisper Bird and scan for exits, discovering a tunnel system suitable for flight. They escape the exploding cavern, folding the Whisper Bird's wings and using its mining laser to widen the final exit. Emerging from the cave system, they witness Captain Korda's ship jumping to lightspeed. After a moment of reflection, they decide to travel to the planet Thune, believing that friends of their parents may offer assistance.

Production Notes

According to the author Cavan Scott, the original concept for the beginning of Star Wars: Adventures in Wild Space bore a striking resemblance to the opening sequence of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Due to this similarity with the then-upcoming anthology film, the Lucasfilm Story Group requested that Scott revise the story, leading to the creation of Adventures in Wild Space: The Escape.
