Agoraphobia

Agoraphobia was a type of anxiety disorder that led to a fear of both open areas and desolate planets. This condition could affect various species, including Humans, Mon Calamari, Duros, Ebruchi, and Selonians. Agoraphobia was common among Selonians because they spent their lives in the subterranean tunnels of the world Selonia. It was also observed that citizens of the urban planet Coruscant sometimes developed agoraphobia. Other individuals, such as the bounty hunter Gyran, the pilot Ibtisam, and the gunner Krudar, also suffered from agoraphobia.

Description

Agoraphobia, an anxiety disorder, triggered a fear of expansive areas and deserted planets in those affected. Those suffering from agoraphobia were referred to as "agoraphobics". This condition could potentially affect several sentient species including Humans, Mon Calamari, Duros, Ebruchi, and Selonians. Because Selonians spent most of their lives in the intricate tunnel systems of their homeworld, Selonia, agoraphobia was prevalent among them, with varying degrees of severity. Consequently, Selonians generally disliked outer space. Conversely, the Ebruchi's multigenerational exposure to time in space was the root cause for a mild form of agoraphobia within the species. It was thought that the Muun species' strong connection to their colony world, Muunilinst, made them almost agoraphobic.

History

Before and during the Imperial era

By 32 BBY, the planet Coruscant in the Core Worlds was home to many kilometer-high apartment buildings that included indoor features such as living spaces, hydroponic gardens, and parks. The residents of these structures, who rarely went outside, began to exhibit signs of agoraphobia.

Ibtisam's starship was shot down above Endor, an event which would leave her adrift in space and agoraphobic.

At some point between 0 ABY and 4 ABY, the Human bounty hunter Gyran developed a mild case of agoraphobia. This became evident during a mission to the Outer Rim Territories planet Sedri to retrieve the Barani List, which contained the names of operatives working for the Black Sun. Gyran found the planet's oceans daunting, but felt more at ease within its underwater caves.

During the Battle of Endor in 4 ABY, the Rebel Alliance pilot Ibtisam engaged the Galactic Empire's 181st Imperial Fighter Wing. Ibtisam's B-wing starfighter was shot down during the second wave of Imperial fighters. The Mon Calamari pilot ejected from her starship and floated helplessly in space for twelve hours before being rescued. This incident left her with agoraphobia, although she could manage it while inside a ship's cockpit.

Post-Imperial era

In 8 ABY, the Duros New Republic gunner Krudar and his crew aboard the CR90 corvette FarStar traveled through the Kathol Rift in the Kathol sector of the Outer Rim. This area, known for amplifying mental disorders, greatly worsened Krudar's agoraphobia, causing him to remain in his quarters out of fear. Upon leaving his quarters, Krudar perceived the ship's corridors as extending infinitely.

In 18 ABY, the Selonian rebel Dracmus and the Human New Republic captain Han Solo found themselves imprisoned in the same cell within a prison run by the Human League on the planet Corellia, and they successfully escaped together. Subsequently, they attempted to land their primitive Selonian cone ship on Selonia to mediate the conflict between the rebellious Selonian Hunchuzuc Den and the radical Overden. With Dracmus piloting, Solo began repairing the ship in preparation for atmospheric re-entry. As they approached the atmosphere and Solo hastened the repairs, Dracmus began to panic due to a bout of agoraphobia, and the captain told him to remain calm.

Behind the scenes

Agoraphobia was first introduced in the 1995 novel Showdown at Centerpoint, the third book in Star Wars: The Corellian Trilogy by Roger MacBride Allen. In reality, agoraphobia is a recognized anxiety disorder.
