Krudar

Krudar was a male Duros gunner and soldier who, throughout his time, fought for the New Republic, the Alliance to Restore the Republic, and even pirates. Krudar began as a member of the Rebel Alliance, but he eventually left because he believed that the organization was using its goal of bringing freedom to the galaxy as an excuse for acts of violence and terrorism. Krudar joined a group of pirates, where he became friends with a Guudrian named Boom. They served together until their gang was taken down by Imperial forces.

Krudar and Boom went into hiding on the planet Kal'Shebbol in the Kathol sector. They were there when the New Republic launched an assault on the planet to free it from the control of Imperial warlord Moff Kentor Sarne. Even though the planet was successfully liberated, Moff Sarne managed to escape into the Kathol sector with most of his forces. The New Republic authorized the CR90 corvette called FarStar to hunt down the rogue warlord and eliminate any threat he posed to the region. Due to a lack of personnel, they had to recruit from the civilian population of Kal'Shebbol to crew the vessel. Krudar joined the mission and persuaded the New Republic recruiters to accept Boom as well. Krudar served on the FarStar during its mission into the Kathol sector, taking part in numerous operations. However, his grumpy and volatile personality did not endear him to the rest of the crew, and he had several conflicts with other crew members during the mission. Several months after departing Kal'Shebbol, Krudar participated in the Battle of Kathol System, a space engagement that resulted in the demise of Moff Sarne.

Biography

Early career

An EF76 Nebulon-B escort frigate, similar to the vessel Krudar served on.

During the Galactic Civil War, Krudar, a male Duros, was a member of the Alliance to Restore the Republic. Krudar was a soldier stationed at the Alliance's Titan Base in the Corva sector not long after the Battle of Yavin. While cleaning his weapon in the barracks at Titan Base, a group of operatives arrived who were tasked with a mission to infiltrate the Imperial base known as "The Hammer". Krudar later worked as a turbolaser gunner on an Alliance EF76 Nebulon-B escort frigate.

Krudar grew disillusioned with the Rebellion's motivations, however, because he thought their claim to be fighting for justice and freedom was actually a twisted justification for acts of war and terrorism. Furthermore, Krudar had not received any real benefits since joining the Rebellion, so he abandoned his ship and joined a pirate band. The pirates that Krudar worked with were not picky about their targets, and the Duros found himself using his weapon against Rebel, Imperial, and neutral ships. Krudar obtained a blast vest and helmet from a dead Imperial gunner during a boarding action on an Imperial ship. He took them as his own, wore them as part of his uniform, and decorated the blast vest with small red metal studs, each representing one of Krudar's starship or capital ship kills. He became friends with the Guudrian Boom during his time with the pirates.

Eventually, the Empire noticed the pirates, and Imperial forces destroyed the gang. Krudar managed to escape the group's destruction and fled to the Outer Rim Territories with Boom. For a while, the two worked as gunners on various smuggling freighters before arriving on the planet Kal'Shebbol to lie low, shortly before the New Republic liberated it.

Joining the FarStar

The CR90 corvette FarStar

Moff Kentor Sarne, the planet's ruler, escaped into the Kathol sector with the majority of his military forces when the New Republic liberated Kal'Shebbol. As a result, he was still considered a threat to the region's security. Krudar learned that the New Republic had commissioned the CR90 corvette FarStar to track down the rogue warlord, and he signed on as a gunner, hoping to add more kill markers to his blast vest. The Duros also persuaded the recruiters to hire Boom, telling them that his explosives expertise would be an asset on the mission. Krudar kept his past a secret from his new crewmates, and Boom would not reveal anything about it either. He spent most of his time on the ship with the turbolasers, either inspecting them or standing guard by them.

Krudar participated in a gunnery competition several weeks into the mission, shortly after leaving the planet Binaros, in an attempt to win an extended shore leave at the FarStar's next stopover. His turbolaser began to spark and malfunction during the contest, and the Duros believed that one of the other crewmembers had sabotaged his weapon to prevent him from winning. The feeder plant, which the FarStar had inadvertently picked up during their mission to Binaros, had actually caused the malfunction. The mobile plants had extracted nutrients and compounds from areas of the ship, causing damage to several systems during their explorations. Before the plant became a real danger to the ship, the ship's xenobiologist, Varel DeVay, managed to create a gaseous poison to kill it.

Rising tensions

Krudar was in the command center several weeks later when he got into an argument with Ensign Colton, one of the few regular New Republic naval crewmen assigned to the ship. Both were suffering from the effects of a biochemical agent created by the Qektoth Confederation, a group of rogue scientists who believed in the superiority of biological technology. After rescuing two Imperial crewmen from a damaged Gamma-class assault shuttle that the Confederation had used as a testbed for their new weapon, the crew of the corvette had been exposed to the agent. The agent made Krudar more antagonistic and belligerent than usual, and he had to be separated from Colton before the argument escalated into a real fight. Captain Kaiya Adrimetrum temporarily confined both Krudar and Colton to their quarters, despite their protests.

Boom, Krudar's Guudrian friend

The crew of the FarStar began to experience a variety of psychological effects, ranging from paranoid feelings to full-blown hallucinations, while traveling through the volatile area of space known as the Kathol Rift. The Rift's effects were well-documented, and many crews passing through the area had reported similar experiences. The Rift's effects intensified Krudar's mild agoraphobia, and the feelings he experienced sometimes prevented him from leaving his quarters. He would perceive the corridors of the ship lengthening into the distance if he attempted to leave his quarters to go to his duty station. The feeling would only subside when the gunner returned to his quarters.

The constant stress of crewing the FarStar began to irritate Krudar, making him more aggressive, grumpy, and impatient. After several altercations with various crew members, the command crew warned Krudar that if he participated in any more, he would be stripped of his rank and position, as well as confined to his quarters for the remainder of the mission. To add to his worries, his friend Boom had become a major source of irritation. The Guudrian's love of explosions and pyrotechnics had led him to experiment with several of the crew's personal belongings by setting them on fire to see how they interacted with heat and flames. Although Krudar tried to restrain Boom, he had a difficult time, and the situation did little to improve the command crew's opinion of the Duros, as he had vouched for Boom to join the crew in the first place. As a result, Krudar became frustrated with Boom because his actions made it more difficult for the gunner to maintain a low profile with the crew.

The Battle of Kathol system

The Battle of the Kathol system

After several months, the FarStar finally arrived in the Kathol system, which was Moff Sarne's new power base and the home of the mysterious DarkStryder, an insectoid entity responsible for the creation of the exotic DarkStryder technology that Sarne coveted. Krudar stood to his assigned duty and participated in the Battle of Kathol System, an engagement that resulted in the death of Moff Sarne, the destruction of the majority of his forces, the death of the mysterious DarkStryder, and the loss of the FarStar itself.

Personality and traits

Krudar, a green-skinned, red-eyed Duros, appeared to be a stereotypical member of his species, projecting an image of calm and peace. In reality, he enjoyed the thrill of ship-to-ship combat and the prestige that came with it. His primary concerns were material gain and keeping track of his kills. Krudar was friendly to newcomers to Titan Base during his time with the Rebellion, but he remained indifferent to them until they proved themselves to be reliable and competent. He only spoke when necessary, unlike most of his species, who enjoyed company and sharing stories of their adventures. However, he did translate for his companion, Boom, when necessary. Krudar was also very protective of the weapons in his care, and he did his best to keep them in top condition.

The relentless pressure of running the FarStar at peak operating condition with no support network began to take its toll on Krudar during his time on the vessel, and his carefully controlled belligerence surfaced more frequently. This resulted in arguments and confrontations with various crewmembers, and he sometimes believed that his shipmates were deliberately trying to antagonize him by rigging his weapon to malfunction or attempting to draw him into an altercation when they knew he was being watched for any signs of hostility. Spending weeks confined to the FarStar made Krudar more grumpy and irritable than usual, and the Duros was unable to control his feelings while infected with a biochemical agent devised by the Qektoth Confederation, resulting in a public confrontation with Ensign Colton on the bridge of the FarStar.

Krudar maintained a friendship with Boom from his days as a pirate, which led to the Duros convincing the New Republic to allow the Guudrian aboard the FarStar. However, Boom's overriding interest in explosions and melting objects did not endear him to the crew of the ship, and Krudar suffered from the crew's impatience and frustration with his friend. As the only one who could translate for Boom, Krudar frequently found himself having to control his friend's behavior, which became increasingly difficult as the mission progressed.

Krudar, who was mildly agoraphobic, preferred to spend his free time in his quarters rather than socializing with his shipmates. While his condition was not a full-blown phobia and did not affect his duties, he found his fears intensified by the effects of the Kathol Rift during the FarStar's journey through the region of space it occupied.

Skills and abilities

Krudar was trained in a variety of gunnery disciplines, including blaster artillery, vehicle-mounted blasters, capital ship, and starship-mounted weapons. He was also capable of repairing weapons on starships and capital ships, and he was knowledgeable about other alien species.

Equipment

Krudar typically carried a blaster pistol and a repair kit while on duty. He wore a black blast helmet with a personalized sigil and a grey and red blast vest adorned with small metal studs.

Behind the scenes

The cover of The DarkStryder Campaign.

Krudar was created for West End Games' The DarkStryder Campaign, which was released on July 17, 1995. Krudar, a member of the FarStar's support crew, was mentioned in all three subsequent supplements to the campaign. The DarkStryder Campaign suggested that Krudar be kept alive during the campaign's events, but that the gamemaster was free to develop his personality as needed. The "Crew Development" section of Endgame suggests that he will likely die with the FarStar during the space battle, but it also notes that he may be useful during the ground battle.
